The problem with the racial idea is that you have guys who are of both Polynesian and Maori/European persuasion. They can pretty much pick and chose who they play for. Where you played junior footy is much more clear cut.

Yep there a few who would obviously be eligible for both in my idea, but currently only a few.
It would be hard for them to choose alliegiance in that case- but perhaps they could re-assess their alliegance every year (it would only be 3 or so players) which would help ensure best possible players are playing.

Where you played your junior footy is not as clear cut as you'd think?
Think Greg Eastwood lived in NZ til he was 13/14 and then moved to keebra park. Who does he play for?

Harrison, Halatau, Pritchard, Cayless bro's, puletua bro's, Stanley, Perritt, Roberts, Webster, Covell, Inu, - either born or raised aswell as playing junior footy in australia.
Miles call want team Auckland Vs Kiwi-aussies??

Theres far more who have played junior footy in both countries - than players who would qualify for both - wiki(retired), Leulauai, Stanley(probably opt to play the real S.O.O), Faiumu.

What about Auckland born players v everyone else?
The rest of NZ hates Auckland and Aucklanders unless they are playing for NZ.

As a south Islander who would you have to cheer for?? Seriously does anyone know which modern players with a South Island upbringing birth or childhood??

Kidwell, Mannering, Halatau . . Corey Lawrie

What the hells a pakeha?

Anyway i can tell you that living in the south south islanders have a real chip on theres shoulders about Aucklanders...not about north islanders but about Aucklanders.

Personally i think the cut off for the north should be Wellington with Wellington falling into the south catchment area but thats just my opinion.

Wellington + David Kidwell (christchurch) + Mannering (Nelson) + Wellington Orcas + Canterbury Bulls + Bergman (coach) = All Blacks vs Japan. A complete hiding with Marc Ellis scoring 5+ tries.

I live in South Auckland, I have no affliation to the greater auckland what so ever - as far as I am concerned it is purely were I reside and even then I would list my city of residence as Manukau City.

Pakeha orginally to all non-maori, modern days use to new zealanders of european decent. Though it would be applicable in this case to all new zealanders not of pacific island or maori decent. i.e Webb could play fullback.

I betcha the players would sign up faster to this prosposal than the other option given - otherwise it will be a financial disaster, they would struggle to get any watching a trial match with no feeling. they'll end up playing it at ericcson numba 2 in front only the camera and commentators.
It would also have implications on the type of game played resulting the usual selfish trial type of game play.

Ultimately its a celebration of their kiwi roots as Maori New Zealanders, European New Zealanders, Pacific Island Nz'ers and even token Aboriginal 'Nzers".
These cultural differences of different cultural origins unite us (webb, fien) or at somestage all our ancestors came to new zealand, whether it be 5, 10, 40 ,140 or 700 years ago.

I said First played junior footy. If you were a kid growing up in Wainui and then moved over to Aus for better prospects then you'd be in south, if you started in Otahuhu, north. Not everyone plays for one club, yes, but everyone starts with one club. I think most people would have a strong tie to either Auckland or "The rest".

The aussie borns would either need to be lumped into one team depending on what the numbers look like for each side or would go on whoever's heritage they qualify through.

Exactly what they said about State of Origin at the start of it. Time has proven them completetly wrong.

Actually what i ment Mean_maori_mean was all Auckland players down to Wellington. Wellington + the south island players + all sydney born Kiwis so it would be a pretty good match up.

no you didnt you said where they played for junior footy.

We''l agree to disagree, I realise that this predictably be the method used, the fact it will be quite diffucult for players, public to understand.

Harrison and Puletua born in auckland but will play for the non-auckland team bcoz they began playing in aussie.

it'll just end up with players thrown into what ever team suits them or the selectors.
Just like how players choose QLD b'coz its is easier to make the side. (in the past it was easier).

If NZRL were genuine in their amibition to have a origin-esque match they are dreaming if its aucklands vs the rest - no doubt it would be a dud. both financially and in terms of the quality and nature of the game played.

It will be purely a method to rope in more players for New Zealand to utilise and attract those eligible for both aussie and various island nations.

Not really the non-auckland would get wasted - depending on whether how many sydney born kiwis represent put up their hand.

player wise is may currently result in a good spread of talent - but still will not help the feeling of the match nor will it help with the marketing of the game.

Crap idea. At least they are trying I guess...

To all you detractors, stop looking through the telescope from the other end. The bigger picture is promoting the profile of rugby league and we all know it could do with some lifting.

There's gonna be no rugby world cup next year, no yachting, no soccer world cup etc etc.

What a great time to introduce something new following on from the state of origin and we all know the the SOO has been gaining momentum over the past few years.

I'd have anything to fill the gap between SOO, Grand Finals and Tri nations.

Yep but theres going to be a rugby league world cup.

We dont lack the desire for the success of this venture we lack the faith in two individuals like Chalmers and Lowe who have their head up their arse and trust me the are both big headed - So it aint gonna be easy for them to see clearly and come up with the right options etc.

World Cup - even better, although it's not really a WORLD cup.

You've gotta give credit when credit is due. Please tell me what you don't like about the latest objectives that have been recently released. But beforehand, compare them with what was done over the past three or four years.

Chalmers and Lowie are not directly responsible for making these changes. They're just the voices implementing them and I'd rather someone did this confidently, albeit someone knowing what they're talking about.

Chalmers - national representative player, time at Manly, astute businessman (check out companies directorships)
Lowie - national coach, ARL coach/administrator

Trust me, i've been a harsh and justified critic of the NZRL in the past as well as other administrations, but I'm liking what I see. Transparency and communication will do this and this is often what is lacking with most organisatrions.
