You should have seen some of Fultons good innings, they were in your backyard

Yeah. Apart from instilling some confidence into previously out of form players you cant read too much into this series.

IMO our results against Aus and SAF are a true reflection of where we stand at the moment and i just hope our peformances against the Bangers dont lead the powers to be into thinking our obvious deficiencies are solved, coz they aint!

sh*t, we could of tried 1 or 2 youngsters in this series. Ryder, Southee and co. I think we missed a trick.

IMO it the results against AUS and SAF confirm that AUS are out front by a margin at the moment, and SAF, PAK, SL, NZ, ENG, IND, WI are all at pretty much the same level, we were 1 ball away from a series win in SAF

Can't agree on the youngsters, Bangladesh deserved the respect of the full side, same as when any NRL side plays the wooden spooners, take it for granted and you will be knocked over

Back to this match, 165/6, they require 171 from 56

Thoughts on Gillespie, did he hurt a shoulder or strain a heart muscle ?

Thing is mate (Beavers Headgear), Gillespie took 3/20 odd from 6 the other day. Good figures. But what they fail to show is that he was still dishing up the same garbage he did in Aus and Ashraful (their 1 class batsman) took to him, and he had to be taken off after 2. He came back and cleaned up later on (after Oram had removed the dangerman) against a line up that (while improving) is still not up to that level. It just showed, against classier players Gillespie still comes up short.

As far as bringing in youngsters go, i'd rather try 1 or 2 against Bangladesh than chucking them straight in against a hardened, professional outfit.

I still think you must pick your best side for an International. The way Southee was worked for me was fine, he had that Charity match as a taster, and was taken too a bit but he has a sense of the occassion now. I wouldn't just chuck a youngster in for the sake of it.

I agree about Gillespie, he needs a break from it, go and play the Shield for Wellington and work on his game. The problem is at the moment, we have a pretty bad bunch of quickies around. Thinking through the sides, from Otago maybe Scott could have a run, but imo he would be found wanting, there is on-one from Canterbury, Wellington, can't see anyone there (don't rate O'Brien for ODIs), CD nobody springs to mind as I don't rate Mason in ODIs, ND, Southee, but still too soon imo, Aldridge as an outsider, and I will keep an eye on how Butler goes, and then finally in Auckland we have Adams (who i would have if he is available) and from what McMillan has been saying Tuffey is bowling well again.

Ideally i would not want Martin or Gillespie playing ODIs. Sinclair is also a waste at the moment. I would like to see this

McCullum
How
Fulton
Styris
Taylor
Oram
Vettori
Mills
Adams
Patel
Martin

Extra pressure on Vettori as a 7, but i beleive Mills is more than capable of being an 8. 4 seamers, so we have extra cover for whoever is not performing that day, 2 spinners, Patel is a pretty tidy bowler, and Styris there as extra backup.

Yeah, i agree there's no obvious replacements, especially amongst the pacemen, which is why i'd consider Southee against Bangladesh only. If he comes off, well and good, if he doesn't, well he shouldn't be scarred too much, and he would of got a taste at a higher level.

Skippy at 7. Dont get me started!

Pretty good line up you've named. Only changes i'd make, Bond for Martin once he comes back. Southee for Adams.

I still have a nagging doubt with McCullum opening. I realize why he's there because we basically have no one else putting their hand up. But jeez, i think he's more value finishing an innings off with Oram.

Once everyone is fit again:

Vettori
Franklin
Mills
Bond

is a perfectly solid ODI bowling line-up. A fast man, a left arm swing bowler, a line/length man, and a canny spinner. Martin, Adams & Patel should all be the fringe bowlers, along with either Gillespie or Butler. IMO, Gillespie is simply not good enough, Butler offers more.

NZ should then use Sinclair as a stabilizing 3...

McCullum (not sold on this yet)
How
Sinclair
Fulton
Taylor
Styris
Oram

Taylor must fulfill McMillans role as a heavy hitting man who can up the run rate, but keep an average above 30. Oram is essentially replacing Cairns, Sinclair replacing Fleming, & How replacing Astle. Vincent is awful.

I'm not sold on Franklin as a o/d bowler.

He has a high R.P.O and his strike rate aint that flash. At his pace, if the ball stops swinging, he becomes fodder.

Personally, i'd prefer Taylor at 3. He scored all his runs for CD there. He scored both his o/d 100s there. Plus he's naturally aggressive and plays the aerial shots well, which is what you need to take advantage of the powerplay overs. This no.5 spot has meant he's had to adjust his game, which he's struggled with.
