Ma'a Nonu more surprised than anyone over playing at second five, while the French make seven changes
Ma'a Nonu admits the call to place him at second-five this weekend against France even took him by surprise.
He says he has been busy adjusting to playing at 12 in training yesterday and this morning.
Nonu agrees it is now up to him to hassle the French, try to wreak havoc and make sure they run out of ideas.
Nonu playing in the number 12 jersey is THE story of the All Blacks team to play in the second test.
Speaking to a throng of journalists this morning, the new second five appeared a lot more comfortable than in previous visits into the media den. Nonu agrees he has matured, on and off the field, but still needs to cement his spot.
The All Blacks had a lengthy training session earlier this morning, with a lot more work for Nonu and partner Mils Muliaina in the midfield.
Richie McCaw and Graham Henry are spending time with the French soccer team this morning, a couple of hours before kick off in their match against Greece in Paris.
Meanwhile, the French can never be accused of not doing things their own way.
The national rugby team has cancelled training and also called off tomorrow's scheduled session, with the coaching staff believing less training will help them get closer to the All Blacks.
France coach Bernard Laporte has made seven changes to his starting 15 for Paris, recalling veteran hooker Raphael Ibanez to lead the team.
Ibanez, who has 81 caps, replaces Dimitri Szarzewski as hooker and takes over the captaincy from injured lock, Fabien Pelous, who has a rib injury. He led Les Blues to that memorable win over New Zealand in the 1999 World Cup semifinal.
Another change in the front row is at loosehead prop, with long time prop Sylvain Marconnet dropped to the bench with Olivier Milloud coming in.
Also promoted from the bench are lock, Lionel Nallet and flanker Remy Martin. Among the other changes are Dimitri Yachvili being axed at halfback, and replaced by Jean-Baptiste Elissalde, although Laporte is sticking with nervy first five Damien Traille.
Cedric Heymans replaces Christophe Dominici on the left wing while, at fullback, Pepito Elhorga comes in to replace Julien Laharrague.
French manager Jo Maso, who played against the All Blacks in the late 1960s, believes the new look team will front and is hoping it will invoke a new spirit and a more physical approach. Maso says the team realises it is playing for 100 years of All Blacks-France history this weekend and want to show some due respect.
The French have also revealed a new playing strip for the game, which is a white jersey, white shorts and red socks.
It is similar to the uniform used 100 years ago against the All Blacks, which was a game won by the All Blacks 38-8..

The full French squad is: 5-Pepito Elhorga, 14-Aurelien Rougerie, 13-Florian Fritz, 12-Yannick Jauzion, 11-Cedric Heymans, 10-Damien Traille, 9-Jean-Baptiste Elissalde, 8-Elvis Vermeulen, 7-Remy Martin, 6-Julien Bonnaire, 5-Pascal Pape, 4-Lionel Nallet, 3-Pieter de Villiers, 2-Raphael Ibanez (captain), 1-Olivier Milloud.

Replacements: 16-Dimitri Szarzewski, 17-Sylvain Marconnet, 18-Loic Jacquet, 19-Serge Betsen, 20-Dimitri Yachvili, 21-David Marty, 22-Christophe Dominici.

The All Blacks are picking the French to use their old up and under tactics tomorrow morning, or at least they are expecting France to kick a lot. The New Zealand team will not mind that too much at all, given their counter attacking weapons.
Centre Mils Muliaina says they will still have to be careful of the huge Damien Traille up and unders: they are not effective at times, but very high. Muliaina says he kicked them pretty high and Leon MacDonald did an awesome job in collecting them. He also says they have done a bit of practice on it because it is certainly one of the higher balls that he has seen.
Muliaina jokes that maybe it is a blessing for the second week in a row it is Leon MacDonald under the high ball and not him.

PARIS: The most experienced All Blacks team in test history will run on to Stade de France to face France tomorrow morning.

Never in 415 tests has a New Zealand team fielded a starting XV with more caps than the 532 that captain Richie McCaw's men tally.

While the All Blacks have been building depth through player rotation over the past three years, coach Graham Henry has also persisted with a core of players he inherited in 2004, the bulk of whom start together in his "best team" on Sunday.

McCaw said the team's depth of experience had become a foundation stone of their success.

"It definitely gives you confidence.

"Alot of the guys have played a lot of games now," he said.

"When you look back to the World Cup in 2003, 14-odd guys from then are still in the squad, which is huge.

"Three years on, experience means hopefully we're better rugby players because of that.

"I'm sure there was the toss of a coin for a few positions in the team - it's amazing we've got that luxury and that gives you confidence as well."

The record easily shades the previous mark of 509 test caps, held by the 1997 All Blacks team who downed Australia 36-24 at Dunedin to clean-sweep the Tri-Nations.

That team, near the peak of their powers, boasted an enormously experienced tight five, headed by hooker and captain Sean Fitzpatrick.

This weekend's side has the experience evenly spread, with an average of 33 tests a man in the backs and 38 in the forwards.

The most experienced is lock Chris Jack with 56 caps. Winger Sitiveni Sivivatu has the least with 10.

The total could have been even more had second five-eighths Aaron Mauger and winger Rico Gear had not lost out in tight selection duels with Ma'a Nonu and Sivivatu respectively.

Two other veteran players who have not made the 22 are forwards Anton Oliver (51 tests) and Reuben Thorne (44).

Including this weekend, the All Blacks will play 13 tests before the World Cup quarter-finals, a time when experience will be a highly valued commodity.

The All Blacks have some way to go before they can match the 696 test caps - believed to be a world record - that the starting Lions team fielded for the first test of last year's tour at Christchurch. That Lions reserve bench had 348 caps.

Nonu and McDonald either dropped passes or let in a try. They both dont deserver to be in the AB side. Good backup players but nothing more.

Solid win, good to see the French have a bit of backbone. Though again with 2 mins to go and with only 8 points on the board they went for a penalty kick to make the score line look better than they actually played.
