Oceania to join Asia playoffs?
Reuters

FIFA chief Sepp Blatter said on Friday that the champions of Oceania could join the final round of Asian qualifiers for future World Cups.

Oceania's current "half" place could possibly shrink further if the regional winners had to join a group of Asian teams instead of being involved in a two-leg playoff.

"I think the solution will be to have the winner of the Oceania elimination join the Asian group," Blatter told reporters in Tokyo.

"I don't know if we will say it's a half slot or if they will go and play with Asia. At least they will have the possibility to fight to enter the World Cup."

Representing Oceania, Australia qualified for the World Cup for only the second time last month after beating Uruguay on penalties following a 1-1 stalemate over two games.

Despite qualifying for Germany through the region, the Socceroos had already committed to plans to leave Oceania to become part of the Asian Football Confederation.

New Zealand opposed Australia's move amid concern their defection could dilute the quality of the region and leave it vulnerable to FIFA politics.

Blatter stressed, however, that FIFA's executive committee was yet to make a decision on the matter.

"Everyone must have the chance, among FIFA's 207 national associations, to try and get into the World Cup," he said.

"But it has not been decided yet."

Meanwhile, Blatter expressed confidence that 2002 co-hosts South Korea and Japan could demonstrate that their success at the last World Cup was no fluke.

South Korea became the first Asian team to reach the semi-finals while Japan reached the last 16.

Who knows what will happen...that's just Blatter's opinion, so it's not like it will happen.
It's probably the fairest system, like it should have been in 2001 and 2005. It was always obvious that the Oceania winner plays off against Asia, like we did in 1997.

Would be funny if the Socceroos ended up playing the Kiwis for a place in the World Cup.

It's not good enough if it's only the champions advancing through to asia. It'd just be NZ every time, like it used to be for Aus. There needs to be two or three spots, so the pacific island nations have more incentive and opportunity to improve.

yeah i spose i agree with nibbs, if the whole region merged then all the sh*t teams would only play in the preliminary stages. and if the teams arent better than the asian teams then they dont deserve to be there anyway.
the final asian world cup qualifying stage had 8 teams total. if most or all oceanian teams get booted before the final stage than they have still participated but were obviously not good enough. yet.

Jealous are we? Enjoy playing the might of Vanuata and Tahiti, while we're playing in the Asian Cup, Asian Champions League and have a great World Cup qualification campaign.

If Oceania into Asia could be beneficial for us and our current/former region. At present, before 2006, Oceania had 12 members, including Aus: American Samoa, Aus, Cook Isl, Fiji, New Caledonia, NZ, PNG, (Western) Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tonga and Vanuatu.

AFAICT Asia has 45 members but it incorporates South East Asia, North Asia (e.g. Kazakhstan and Mongolia), the Indian Sub-Continent and the Middle East.

If Oceania became a sub zone of Asia, you could 57 members, enough to split Asia into two zones for WC Qualifying purposes.

1) Central Asia - incorporating North and Central Asia, the Indian Sub-Continent and the Middle East.

2) Asia Pacific - incorporating
* Oceania,
* federations off mainland SE Asia (such as Brunei, Taiwan/Chinese Taipei, Guam, Indonesia, Phillipines, East Timor)
* mainland SE Asia (such as Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam)

That would give an Asia Pacific group of 24 teams (increasing it from the previous 12) and a Central Asian group of 32 teams. Any thoughts?

It is only a matter of time before OFC becomes a sub-group of AFC for World Cup qualification. I can't see the AFC wanting any OFC nations in other competitions though
