ICC pitch consultant Andy Atkinson returns home 48 hours before the title clash between India and Australia.

During the semifinals of India and New Zealand, the Wankhede's pitch came under negative light when BCCI decided to use Pitch 6 of the stadium, which was off-center and had hosted two matches earlier in the competition, including the one where India triumphed over Sri Lanka by 302 runs.

Andy Atkinson was nowhere to be seen during pitch preparation 48 hours ahead of the World Cup final between India and Australia. It is learned that Atkinson had already left the country as his assignment was already over. "Andy's assignment is over and he has gone back. Don't try to find controversy where there is none. Nowhere it is written that ICC's pitch consultant needs to be present before the final," a BCCI source told PTI.

Later, ICC came out clarifying the controversy around the semi-final between India and New Zealand being played on a used pitch at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday.

"Changes to planned pitch rotations are common towards the end of an event of this length and have already happened a couple of times. This change was made on the recommendation of the venue curator in conjunction with our host. The ICC independent pitch consultant was apprised of the change and has no reason to believe the pitch won’t play well," an ICC spokesperson touched upon the entire issue.

The ICC Playing Conditions of the World Cup dictate that the relevant ground authorities are responsible for the selection and subsequent preparation of a pitch. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is the concerned body in this case. Andy Atkinson works as ICC's independent pitch consultant working with the Indian local groundstaff during the World Cup.

I think we only had about a 25-30% chance of beating them, but that stitch up leaves a bit of a sour taste

Final day - as a neutral, it's interesting - India clearly the better side, and clearly everything (legal and beyond) has been stacked in their favour. Australia, despite winning 8 on the trot haven't been terribly impressive imo (only really India has, which is perhaps why everyone else looks less so), and a worry is that several of the people who've been important in dragging Aust through with the bat (Marsh, Maxwell, and to a lesser extent Head) are not really the guys you want to lean on against top level opposition - and Labs just isn't that good, keeper is a plod... and Smith strangely un Smith like (although he's not as good an odi player as he is test bat)...

That said, kind of has that feeling - to paraphrase the saying about German football - cricket's a funny game where 22 people spend a day or more throwing, hitting and chasing a red ball around, and then the Australians win...

Just want this game over tbh so we can move on to the main event: 5 game t20 seies v India starting next Thursday.
Seriously what a disgrace CA are scheduling that 5 days after a WC final.

If they win the team deserves to come home and get a proper reception and celebration during the week from the Nation.

Instead half of them are stuck in India for a pointless T20 series.

What would happened if we didn't make the semis. They would have sit there for 2 weeks doing nothing. Or some come home for a week then head back.

Shit timing for both countries but especially us. If we win the cup, we will be hated but still have to stay there. If we lose, we'll prob get bullied further in the t20 series.
