That's right, Norths were originally called the Shoremen.
They changed their name about 80 years ago after receiving sponsorship from some company with a 'Bear' brand. Can't remember but I think they sold some household product like shoe polish or floor wax.
I always thought that Blood and Bandages was the original nickname for St George but can't find much to support this. I have something here that says thejersey was known as 'Blood and Bandages' but there's nothing definite about the team actually being called that. I'm wondering if that's a myth. Happy to be proven wrong.
They were offcourse known for a while as being the 'Dragon Slayers'. However, there's no real indication as to when. They seemed to have this nickname in the late 20s and early 30s.
Before St George came in 1st grade in 1921, they were briefly known as the 'Illawarraites' (sp).
In fact, they were officially known as WestsIII (3rd grade team) when the NSWRL moved the boundaries between 1911-1915.
But everyone still called them St George... now that sounds familiar.
