Just as a different angle on the previous topics

2001
1) After 4 rounds 2 wins 2 losses

2) Went to Canberra got done (20-6 is 2001 26-14 in 2004)
had a shocking game early but came back to a degree in the 2nd half
(2001 down 0-24 to Knights finish 14-32 in 2004 down 0-36 to Dogs came back to 14-48)

3) beat Brisbane by a small margin early in the year (24-16 in 2001 26-18 in 2004)

4) Errors by Parra cost us as much as good play by other teams some examples in 2001
- Knock on off the kick off v Knights
- Knock on off the kick off v Raiders
- Hodgson drops a sitter the leads to the Sharks try (rnd 2)

5) Wagon started the season at 5/8th

6) Big name youngester doesn't start the season - Lyon played the early rounds coming off the bench

7) Parramatta inconsistant they didn't win back to back games untill rounds 11 and 12.

8) Parramatta big names signings considered no names or washed up while players leaving considered better (Taylor, Buettner, Westley while Schifcofske left)

9) Smith cops a bagging for points 5 & 8

10) Parramatta's 1st year in a new jersey

I wrote a similar piece yesterday on another thread but agree whole-heartedly. After 10 rounds we had 12 points. From there we only lost 2 games for the rest of the year. I think some of these guys have way too much caffeine in their systems.

Round 5 in 2001, beat the Warriors 30-24 at Parramatta after leading 28-12 with 20 minutes remaining. I just hope this doesnt happen against Souths, then again the Warriors were a good side.

Parramatta have released 4 different jersies in the last 20 years.

Parramatta released one in 1986- result minor premiers and go on to win 4th premiership
1995- result second last to North Queensland, and wins just 3 games in the season
2001- result minor premiers and finish runners up to Newcastle
2004- result so far 2 wins and 4 losses, ?????

Some interesting points there Hurriflatch

The point is it is too early to tell anything

Parra were going no better results wise then 2001 and that year Parramatta dominated teams in the 2nd half of the year

Parra are perinial slow starters

2000 - 2 from 6
2001 - 3 from 6
2003 - 2 from 6
2004 - 2 from 4 (with Souths and Manly to come)

so results wise this could become Parramatta's best start in at least 4 years

Going by these stats it looks as though Parra are destined to come last then if we follow the pattern...

I think the main thing is, going on past years, the premiers haven't exactly looked like premiers in the first month or so of football. Just look at Penrith last year and the Roosters the year before...

Panthers 2003:

Rd 1: Lost at home to Broncos 24-20
Rd 2: Lost away to Storm 42-16
Rd 3: Won away v Roosters 23-22
Rd 4: Lost at home to Raiders 40-28
Rd 5: Bye
Rd 6: Won away v Souths 16-14

Record after 6 rounds: 2 Wins - 3 Losses - Avg Pts For: 21 - Avg Pts Against: 28

Roosters 2002:

Rd 1: Won at home v Souths 40-6
Rd 2: Lost away to Warriors 21-14
Rd 3: Lost at home to Broncos 22-8
Rd 4: Lost away to Eagles 28-22
Rd 5: Lost at home to Knights 28-12

Record after 5 rounds: 1 Win - 4 Losses - Avg Pts For: 19 - Avg Pts Against: 21

Now that's not to say that poor form in the early rounds means you are going to win the premiership either, but it just shows that no one should be written off or heralded as favourites after 5-6 weeks of the comp.

Add to that the run home of the dogs in 1998 when they had to win their last 6-7 games just to make the finals and then every week was an elimination game. Admittedly they got flogged in the GF but the point that eraly season form isn't a great guide to finals aspirations is again reinforced.

History means nothing. I see the point that we are doing well but really it means absolutely nothing. We have to start winning some games over the next 4-5 rounds. Not to hit peak form but to guarantee a finals spot.

Good point that you make Hurriflash.
History may mean nothing in terms of where a team will finish .But it does tell us something. That you can't always predict how well a team will go based on the first few games(I apologise if I have misinterpreted you here Hurriflash)
DVDHnter, you say we have to start winning some games in the next few weeks- I thought thats what Parra already has done. :|

Are you kidding me?
I've never heard so much shit...This Parra side isn't half the side the 2001 side was...Furthermore this side wouldn't even get close to the 2002 Roosters and 2003 Panthers.

Tell me what you honestly thought of the Panthers side last year after 6 rounds then Nostradamus? =;

Would that 2001 side flog the 2002 Roosters or Bulldogs???

No Doubt that 2001 side is better than last years Panthers!

The point I was making was not that the side this year is as good as the 2001 side. The point is that despite people writing of our season after only 4 rounds it was no better a start result wise then any of the last 4 years.

In 2000 the Wests Tigers were around the top 4 for about 20 rounds of the competition but by the end of the year failed to make the top 8 in the same year Parramatta were mid field but snuck into the top 8 in 7th then made it through to give Brisbane a bigger fright in the GF Qualifer then they got in the Grand Final.

Some of those points I made were ment as a joke for example that suggesting a change of jersey will see the Eels make the Grand Final.

but as I said in my latter post, Parramatta have not at least for the last 4 seasons been strong starters and really since at least 87 I can't remember a year that Parramatta did get off the a great start.

Judge the team & the coach after 26 rounds not 4.

Parra have won their last eight at Parra Stadium.....
Well said Hurriflatch. You separate the sheep from the goats. It is only the first week in April. The nervous nellies are panicing already.
Just as it is possible to have a losing streak, the competition is so close these days that it is just as easy to go on a winning streak. How would this mob be if they were around in the fifties when the Parra team was perennial wooden spooners. Too bloody soft this lot of supporters. Go through the hard times so they can appreciate the good times better.
