Super 14 finals expansion delayed

October 29, 2008 - 5:40PM

The Super 14 finals series will not be expanded until at least the 2010 season after the SANZAR nations were unable to agree on a format for the planned six-team playoffs.
The competition's finals series was set to be increased from four teams to six next season but SANZAR announced today expansion would be postponed until 2010.
SANZAR also confirmed it would continue to trial the current Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) rather than adopt an expanded form of the laws.
Australia, New Zealand and South Africa were unable to come to an agreement on either of the issues.
"These were major issues with major implications in the different markets and we could not reach a consensus on either issue," said Andy Marinos, the acting managing director of SA Rugby, who doubles as the SANZAR's managing director on a rotational basis.
"We would all like to have gone to a six-team play-off series in 2009 and accepted that principle at our July meeting in Perth, but we could not agree on the play-off structure that was to be adopted and, in the interests of SANZAR, we opted to remain with the status quo.''
Marinos also said the SANZAR partners were unable to agree a common approach on the ELVs and opted for the status quo.
"SANZAR was given IRB approval in May to further trial an expanded form of the ELVs and after reflection we have re-committed to that principle as an organisation,'' said Marinos.
"The ELVs as applied in the Tri Nations will continue into the 2009 SANZAR competitions - we're smart enough and professional enough as rugby nations to adapt when we have to.''
The Super 14 season will kick off on February 13.

No need to expand on the ELV's. What has been implemented at Super 14 level has been fine.

But keeping 4 team finals? Makes no sense.

I wouldve thought the 6 team final system would be pretty simple to organise.

1 and 2 get the bye, 3v6 and 4v5 with the winners of those matches playing 1 and 2.

I'm not a fan of a top 8

1st V. 8 is normally one sided and just driven by the $

Thats the thing... it WASNT to be a top 8... a top 6 but with each countries top quailfying team... NOT the top 6 teams qualifying..

they wanted a conference system... similar to the NFL...

which is an okay system... for the NFL and there 30 something teams... dont know about 14 teams

Straight top 6 makes sense.

I'm glad they left it as it is rather than take the option Te Kaha has outlined.

Pfft what a sh*t idea by the Africans.. it should be 6 teams. At the moment there is nothing to play for a few rounds into the season cause it's too hard to make the finals. It's not even interesting like Premier League where there is relegation so there's absoloutely nothing to play for.

saffas just proposed that, coz their teams cant play expansive rugby and coz of the ELV's are screwed anyway, this is just an attempt to make them involved in finals coz no SA teams will make top 4 anytime soon,

With the way the table is, and the quality of the rugby being played, could anyone doubt that a Six Team finals series is the way to go.

The stubborn South Africans veto has cost the Super 14 series dearly. Idiots.

Or is that because without it the Tahs have no hope of making the semis?

Well yes & no.

Sharks look like missing out as well as the Brumbies. We have a situation (a good one) where a team in 5th or 6th could likely win the comp if given the chance.

Both the Sharks & Waratahs have been there own worst enemies in the failure to score bonus points and losing some of the softer matches.

FWIW I see the top 4 being

Bulls 46
Chiefs 45
Canes 43
Crusaders 41

Teams in 5th & 6th are only bonus points away from the top. This is like being excluded based on for-and-against, rather than overall performance.

With a 14 team comp, top 6 for the finals seems reasonable. In a comp as close as this year especially. Regardless of whether the Waratahs get there or not.

It should be top 6. NRL had a top 8 in the 14 team comp in 2000 and 2001 FFS. A top 6 would have been reasonable.

Kick out the South Africans.
