Wonder what everyone thought of the opening ceremony?

Just finished. Im not going to start a rugby bashing thread, but i thought it was absolutely pathetic. Not much in the way of originality and very ho hum indeed. John Howard screaming when he opened the event sounded really shabby. Overall it looked rushed and void of any new ideas

Thoughts?

"Honest" John got a fair few boos from the crowd, less than a week after a similar reception at the NRL gf. Good to see. The opening ceremony was a shocker, just like the Olympics, why do these presentations always end up presenting images that live up to our stereotype as a nation of yobbos. It's an embarassment.

I can't figure where the $5 million they spent went. There's a lot better things to spend that kind of money on.

Yep, I now now know why I find rugby yawnion one big bore. That game was crap!!! The only excitement came from an ex-leaguie.

Things are not looking up for the rest of this weekend either.

I thought the rendition of 'World in union' was great.... Jose Cura (the tenor) was singing it with a lot of passionate and that lifts the atmosphere. The drums were good too and Rocky was pretty clever I thought. I liked what Roy and HG said afterwards - 'a tribute to all the rugby blood nuts' or something along those lines. The lighting would have taken up most of the money I think and it looked fantastic. When they showed all those faces while the world in union was being sung it looked great. Not a great game to start with but we got away with a win and the world cup is here at last! Great to see all the gold in the crowd too!

Fair enough Mint mate, i guess the drums wern't 2 bad

Just that McAvaney and Griggs were annoying as well. It was like they were commentating a cultural extravaganza, just really irritating when you consider the avg fan watching it wouldn't give a tinkers about the rubbish they were going on about. They shouldn't have tried to follow the 'olympic feel', it was never going to match it. I think they would've been better served to go down a different path

Cheers,

i agree pretty boring nite all together.
The movies were pretty good last nite i think channel ten and nine have saved all their top movies to compete against the union. U cant avoid watching cruel intentions mmmmmmmmmm 'buffy'

But i did think the kids forming 'fatty vautin' :D the guy running to score the try was pretty smart and funny :D

Guys i went to the game and while the opening ceremony was crap and i spent most of my time in the drinks line. I thought the game wasn't to bad, it was no where near the standard that will be required to win the world cup but it was a good start and it was the right result. The best thing about the night was the atmosphere, there is nothing like getting amongest it.
I had a great night and to FIERY TIGER CHICK i am in your words "dumb enough to pay good money to watch the boring thing" and I would do it all over again, the night was fantastic and you are probably just jealous you didn't go.

Lame. I'm just glad I was at a bar to watch it. No-one gives a rat's arse about the WC around here. Its just a novelty that people are going to get over very quickly.

Interesting. I was at a club where there was a pretty big sized turnout, but nobody seemed to care much. When the game was over, some bloke started an 'Aussie Aussie Aussie' chant but was greeted with dead silence. Goes to show how much people (at least down Sutherland Shire way) care for the WC.
