Optimum time to win a grand Final

Interesting view put forward by Brian Smith this week.
Claims the optimum time for parra to win the GF was 98-2001
Sort of concedes that they are rebuilding now to cope with rule changes & salary cap.
I think the view is very true.
I thought the Sharks were in with a shot at roughly the same time 99-03
with 03 being the prime year if a more intelligent approach had been made to recruitment & selections.
Having said that, I would say that 05-08 are going to be important years for us now.
Lets hope the club knows this & leaves no stone unturned for this period.
People in high places, people on the judiciary, rererees consultants, payment optimisers, vice like grip on talented juniors.

I just hope it is while Rogers is stuck playing with the tahs... Not that I'm bitter about him not coming back or anything I swear

Yep, totally agree with you Reefy. You could say that 99 to 03 ws the period when the players from the 1994 presidents cup side were in their prime.

As shown in another thread we have a very, very talented bunch of 18-20 year olds coming through that would easily win an under 20 age group title. The next step is keeping this group together and developing them into quality top grade footballers. It is then i can see the Sharks seriously competing for a title, which unfortunately might not be for another 3 to 5 years based on the 1994 presidents cup team.

In 5 years time, it will be rebuild time again.
its 3 years or bust considering we are now 2 years into a 5 year build.

I dont think alot of our younger players will be ready by then to be honest Reefy. They are only 19.

Ill concede though we need to take advantage of having a quality halfback such as Kimmorley within the next 3 years or so as he is getting into the latter half of his career.

I think the best way to win a comp is how Penrith did it last year. They had there big name players, and a few top line kids on bargain contracts made them a strong side. As these kids get upgraded deals, then there depth is going to get worse and worse.

So maybe next year, but it would need the likes of Simmo, Aitken, Galloway, Williams and Pelo to really step up in a similar manner to what Clinton, Swian, Rodney and the 2 Lukes did at Penrith last year, on top of a couple of astute signings. I don't believe our blokes are any less talented. Only time will tell.

If we make the Panther comparison I think we should consider the average age of the penrith run on side for the GF last year was 25. More importantly the average age of the bench was just 21.

If we are looking to our current Flegg side for players to get us a premiership I'd say we are on track if the quality is there

What's going to be missing is a few hard headed old bastards.

penrith had Sattler & Girdler as elders - who will we have from the current players?

Penrith had a host of seasoned players in Lang, Campbell, Gower & Priddis

penrith had a bunch of players just "ripened" Puletua, Gulavao, Wesser.

Then a host of youngsters from 19 to 23

they had a good mix obviously.

Red herring - we still have to get the current mob into a decent attacking game plan and into decent defensive patterns and techniques while all this development goes on. Big job ahead.

How are we faring in getting to that sort of mix?

Who'll be our veterans. who'll be our seasoned players and our ripeners in 3 years?

We have a long way to go I think

do you think this "rebuilding" stuff is just an excuse for clubs that have recruited poorly and their players didnt live up to the "hype" reefy?

i have read this thread and shake my head in 2001 and 2002 we were a top 4 side

there was no need for a serious rebuild

that only came along when the admins led by the coach made some serious recruitment errors

The Dragons certainly don't know that, with them signing their injury-prone "stars" on big money and signing Waterboy for a few more years. No idea.

The optinum time for the Merged Scum to win a Grand Final was 1999 when they had an $8 million player roster. And they still f*cked it up

Don't bother shutting the gate, the horse is in the next postcode...
