SCOTT Prince's thoughts turned to his late father Les yesterday, just as they have on other memorable days in the past three years.
Les Prince always believed Scott was destined to play State of Origin rugby league for Queensland and yesterday his son became the Maroons' new No. 7.
Scott, 24, was still coming to terms with his selection at the team announcement at Brisbane City Hall although he had been told the previous night by coach Michael Hagan.
"I still can't believe it," he said. "When I spoke to my brother in Townsville this morning he mentioned how dad would have been happy for me. But there's a lot of things I would have liked him to be here for. He missed my wedding and the birth of my daughter. It's times like that I have missed him the most."
Les Prince was killed in a road accident early in 2001 soon after Scott joined the Brisbane Broncos from North Queensland Cowboys.
It was a bad time in Scott's life. Two serious leg injuries stopped him playing most of the 2001 and 2002 seasons and last year he was restricted to seven NRL matches with Brisbane because of a series of lesser injuries.
He switched to Wests Tigers in the off-season.
Scott said yesterday retirement had crossed his mind several times but because of his youth he kept going. "I felt I had a lot more to offer," he said.
