First time in my 16 years in Perth a positive rugby league story has made the West's front page!
Be nice if it was part a NRL master plan for introduction of a club but not holding my breath.
...especially with the Western Force probably being scrapped in the near future.
Seriously, or wishful thinking? Fantastic if true.
I think it is almost inevitable. They are bleeding cash and the ARU are not strong enough to maintain that. There is no great love for them from the other States as there is a feeling that 5 teams spreads the talent pool too thin in Australia. I think there is also a strong push to rationalise the amount of teams in the Super Rugby comp. I don't even think half the team would care if they wound them up.
Pretty amazing that we can get Perth to pay a few million dollars just to get one game. Will be fantastic publicity for rugby league just as the Melbourne game was.
If the NRL are serious about ever having a team in Perth this is the perfect way to kick start. A few games a year and an international this year ate nice but it's nothing compared to SOO. It would be incredible if they announce a Perth team prior to this match and use the game to build awareness of the sport.
Exciting times ahead.
Exactly, I dont really see the point of the test this year and an origin in 2019 if they arnt going a team here. I wish they would tel us their plan.Pretty amazing that we can get Perth to pay a few million dollars just to get one game. Wishful thinking. They're losses are not huge and the aru needs them. Wish it wasn't so but they aren't going anywhere. They have been dire on the field for most their life, if they ever manage to put a winning team out they will draw 20k crowds. Wouldn't be surprised to see a private owner buy them from the ARU next year.
This is great news and one can only hope it is the first step in finally introducing the following permanently:
1. A neutral game every year with venues rotating on a 5 year basis between Melbourne x 2, Perth, Adelaide and NZ
2. Having all origin games on a Saturday night back to back with the NRL taking a 3 week break.
Nswrl competition wasn't broken either. But they saw a way to imorove it.If it ain't broke...
