Origins a drag on the Comp

Every year it's the same thing, block buster NRL games destroyed by Origin. Origin gets all the hype, all the players while the comp is barely making news.
It's Wednesday, we have 5 games this weekend but if you read the paper, watch the news or God forbid watch NRL 360.. all they talk about is Origin . It's 1 game a week away and there's not even any news, it's just talking rubbish.
I enjoy Origin for 3 games of 80 minutes but why does it have to ruin our competition for months!

Until origin is broadcast by a different FTA network to the NRL, we’ll continue to hear about origin selection from round 2 every year. Fox isnt as bad but starts after ANZAC Day.
Also the misinformation that origin is the best 34 players, it’s be best 34 players that can represent Australia.

It sucks because it devalues the NRL competition for a few months and I tend to switch off during these weekends when the Origin players are out, but unfortunately there isn't much we can do because its in the current broadcasting contract. I've seen Wayne Bennett come out this year against the current schedule so at least there some pressure for change in the next broadcast cycle.

Its a pity because Bulldogs vs Broncos would have been a great game to watch had both teams been at full strength.

feel exactly the same here in the uk - origin just demeans the normal rounds and it becomes a turn off, origin used to be very popular over here but not anymore - maybe if it was one game instead of 3 but its all down to money money money innit?

Respectfully disagree on the one game instead of three. We just need to schedule the whole thing better.

I look at something like the Premier League. They have International breaks where players are released from their clubs to play for their national side and the competition pauses. Just throwing out some ideas but we could for example:

- Pause the competition for 3 weeks and play Origin during this time. Gives the option for England to pause their competition and play Internationals against New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, PNG etc. My dream scenario but you know people would complain having to go 3 weeks without club footy.

- Pause the competition for 1 week every 3 weeks or so. This one is a bit too stop start for me but It would mean dealing with less weeks in a row without club footy whilst keeping Origin standalone.

-Pause the competition for 2 weeks then pause the comp for 1 week a few weeks later and play the 3rd game. This way its only a 2 week break then a one week break a couple weeks later.

Any one of these for me is better than the current schedule but obviously you would need to get the broadcasters on board. I know clubs aren't happy with the current system (I reckon it's cost the Bulldogs an extra 10k tickets being sold by having this game this weekend) so maybe something changes for the next broadcast deal.

Sorry, but we can't get rid of, or diminish the product that is:

a) the envy of other sporting codes
b) is worth a fortune for the game
c) is in the top 5 TV programs of the year
d) gives the game enormous reach beyond it's hardcore fan base
e) including the women's is 6 of the top rated sports programs of the year

It's crazy talk. As @newc18 points out, just schedule it better. We all will whinge if the NRL stops for 3 weeks but it's probably better than the six week half-arsed interruptions we have now and gives the game a chance to build other products to fill the void, there are many options that would rate ok.

a) challenge cup style knock-out comp
b) NRLW getting clear air to kick off their comp
c) much needed international matches for nations other than Australia (sure, some will be weakened squads, but it's a chance to blood some players and prepare for the main event tournament at the end of the year)
d) NRL nines events each weekend for three weeks (mini circuit)
e) men's and women's Origin, U19's Origin (M&W), Legends Origin to make the three weeks a festival of Origin

It has its plusses, younger guys get to experience first grade, which can only be good for the game.

And gives lower teams a better chance to win an extra game.

And we can't drag the season on any longer.

Stand alone weekend for 3 straight weeks ( rep period):
Southern hemisphere.
Friday: Samoa v Tonga
Saturday: Queensland vs NSW
Sunday: Fiji vs PNG

Northern hemisphere:
Friday: Ireland vs France
Saturday: England vs New Zealand
Sunday: Wales vs Scotland

All 3 game series with Ireland, Scotland, France and Wales alternating each year.

Origin would be an even bigger joke without the islander boys

In true rugby league fashion the whingers here find fault with the series that is the envy of every other sporting code in Australia.
I’m sure Peter Vlandys is not the least bit interested with this load of bollocks and drivel being spewed here. But continue on. It should be good for maybe 4 pages before you all find something else to complain about.

And don't forget a new thread to do it all again next year.

Yeah it'd make more sense for the league to cancel one of their biggest money spinners and ignore the lost revenue.

Have you ever run a business? I hope not...

Its the worst quality "football" all year. Has more in common with WWE

The sport would be better off if it died but as its here for now it needs to be 3 weeks straight. Would damage the comp less and it might improve the quality with the guys in camp that whole time

Financially? Not a chance - That's a lot of lost revenue that couldn't be made up elsewhere

Agree with the standalone weeks for it though.
