Origins a drag on the Comp

I haven't heard a legitimate argument for it to not be 3 weeks straight. I can't see that damaging quality, ratings, attendance or general interest at all.

Whether we pause the NRL or not in that timeframe is another conversation but at the very least we lessen the impact on the NRL by condensing the origin period.

Sorry, but we can't get rid of, or diminish the product that is:

a) the envy of other sporting codes
b) is worth a fortune for the game
c) is in the top 5 TV programs of the year
d) gives the game enormous reach beyond it's hardcore fan base
e) including the women's is 6 of the top rated sports programs of the year

It's crazy talk. As @newc18 points out, just schedule it better. We all will whinge if the NRL stops for 3 weeks but it's probably better than the six week half-arsed interruptions we have now and gives the game a chance to build other products to fill the void, there are many options that would rate ok.

a) challenge cup style knock-out comp
b) NRLW getting clear air to kick off their comp
c) much needed international matches for nations other than Australia (sure, some will be weakened squads, but it's a chance to blood some players and prepare for the main event tournament at the end of the year)
d) NRL nines events each weekend for three weeks (mini circuit)
e) men's and women's Origin, U19's Origin (M&W), Legends Origin to make the three weeks a festival of Origin
I think it's diminished naturally, tbh.

It's a TV drama production now, and even more I maintain that the State vs State, Mate vs Mate shit that made it so brutal in the 80s and 90s is no longer a thing. Players don't go out there to belt each other silly, club connections are so much stronger in the modern environment and even if you're a headcase like Spencer or can turn it off, you don't want to go out there and smear your teammates when you have 15 more rounds of footy to play with them. Plus, the season itself is so much longer and more strenuous that Origin just isn't a step up anymore. The focus of the players is elsewhere.

It doesn't mean we should get rid of it, but the current format is not worthwhile

In true rugby league fashion the whingers here find fault with the series that is the envy of every other sporting code in Australia.
I’m sure Peter Vlandys is not the least bit interested with this load of bollocks and drivel being spewed here. But continue on. It should be good for maybe 4 pages before you all find something else to complain about.
The game has thrived by constantly adapting and changing to improve the overall product. We're always looking to alter the schedule to get the best outcome for the sport.
Recently ANZAC day has been altered and improved apon as has Vegas.
Vlandys is always looking for ways for us to improve and this is no different.

I love Origin but to have a mouth watering contest like Brisbane vs Canterbury made redundant is a crime and it would be a sin not to try and find a way that we're not simply robing peter to pay Paul.
We can have both !

The moment we stop innovation and improvement we die.

Origin has great players but watching a team formulate a playing style playing together all year is actually more entertaining for me.
Penrith vs Dogs was better than either of the first 2 Origins and Brisbane vs Dogs could have been as good..
We'll never know.

Well said. Currently I think it's in the Broadcast agreement.
We need to stop letting channel 9 run our game.

Stop the nrl for 4 weeks

Wed night mens origin
Thursday women’s origin
Friday tonga v Samoa
Sat / Sunday nz v Fiji / png / England and or under 19 origin

Also lessens player fatigue and clubs don’t lose star players during origin.

The current system is stupid

Having origin on consecutive weeks will increase focus on the series too

Pretty much the best way IMO. Three Wednesdays back to back, you can even just have origin affected rounds at the start and end if it's a real push for time, TV, whatever. Then off rounds in the middle with other rep games like pacific tests etc.

Stand alone weekend for 3 straight weeks ( rep period):
Southern hemisphere.
Friday: Samoa v Tonga
Saturday: Queensland vs NSW
Sunday: Fiji vs PNG

Northern hemisphere:
Friday: Ireland vs France
Saturday: England vs New Zealand
Sunday: Wales vs Scotland

All 3 game series with Ireland, Scotland, France and Wales alternating each year.
QLD wouldn't be able to field a competitive team if the Pacific teams played at the same time.

10 million viewers over 3 nights and we think it’s lost its flavour? One of the attractions of origin is the fact it eats up the media over several weeks. It’s gargantuan and feeds the NRLs coffers with endless $s publicity, and soft fan attention. It’s the greatest marketing tool in Australian sport. Yeah so let’s tamper with it hey? Our opposition would give anything to have origin. It’s the bane of their mid season. Enjoy it and stfu! Whingers!

Can't play Samoa v Tonga with all their best playing Origin and they can't sell the lie that Origin is the pinnacle without them

They will pick origin so yeh those teams will be devalued a bit but they have the depth to cover it imo

Can’t see too or luai not picking origin if they got picked

Do you think that making it standalone and reducing it's affect on the season proper will reduce viewers?

Dunno but if it increased them I’m sure nine would want to change the format. And I’m sure they know what works and what doesn’t. Given the tv viewership and the gold standard the series sets I can’t imagine them wanting to risk changing it.

I don't think Nein's concern is Origin ratings, it's missing their Friday night footy, tbh

You just picked the worst 2 examples. They'd both 100% pick Samoa

As a kid and young adult, loved origin. However in 2011, by memory Dragons were coming first. Looking good for maybe back to back.

So in one of the Origin depleted rounds which we will see this weekend, Dragons played against the Titans. Dragons were without 7 or 8 players. Or something like that.

Dragons got beaten, and from that point on, they never got the momentum back and finished fifth. Eventually got knocked out in the second week against Brisbane, which ended up been Lockys final game.

Just like in 2011, Origin period drags on for the best part of two months. Origin period could easily be done in a month. Three consecutive Wednesdays, split one round over three weekends. And players only have one round to back up from Origin, which would be after the third and final game.
