Origins a drag on the Comp

I am sure when I used to watch the NRL in the 80's and maybe early 90's, you would have players playing for their Club sides a few days after playing in Origin, I know player welfare as it is now they wouldn't be allowed to do that. but sure it used to happen.
Some of the difference now is travel - in the 1980s you wouldn't have Origin in Perth on Wednesday night, then your club playing the Warriors in Auckland the following weekend - which is what stopped Panthers rep players from backing up after Origin 2.

It's the price we pay for expansion of the game's footprint, and the logistics will only get MORE challenging with Perth, PNG & (possibly) Christchurch added - adding weight to the argument that a clear rep window is the way forward.

Sorry, but we can't get rid of, or diminish the product that is:

a) the envy of other sporting codes
b) is worth a fortune for the game
c) is in the top 5 TV programs of the year
d) gives the game enormous reach beyond it's hardcore fan base
e) including the women's is 6 of the top rated sports programs of the year

It's crazy talk. As @newc18 points out, just schedule it better. We all will whinge if the NRL stops for 3 weeks but it's probably better than the six week half-arsed interruptions we have now and gives the game a chance to build other products to fill the void, there are many options that would rate ok.

a) challenge cup style knock-out comp
b) NRLW getting clear air to kick off their comp
c) much needed international matches for nations other than Australia (sure, some will be weakened squads, but it's a chance to blood some players and prepare for the main event tournament at the end of the year)
d) NRL nines events each weekend for three weeks (mini circuit)
e) men's and women's Origin, U19's Origin (M&W), Legends Origin to make the three weeks a festival of Origin
Great post. This is the way to go.
My preference is (d) a nines comp for NRL and (b) start the women's comp up at this time.

It still happens today

It’s why Moses is out for six weeks he played when he has calf tightness after origin

I don't understand why people are laughing at this. You're all thinking way too small, just think when the minimum contract is 1million, stars on 10 million a year........can you see Liverpool FC, LA Lakers or the Dallas Cowboys letting players play in serious exhibition games?
The American all star games are a joke and for good reason.
I would suggest that when clubs have stars worth $10M they will be looking at every source of revenue possible.

Spot the guy who doesn't watch NRL.

About 90% of the Origin players backed up.

Just leave it as is.
Strongly disagree.

If a 3 or 4 week window can be cleared for Origin & some other self-contained "content" during an NRL season break, it limits the disruption to the competition to just ONE MONTH - tops.. and not the rolling mess we have over twice that time.

Plus it means the disruption is just pausing the premiership.

The extra travel demands from the coming expansion of the Premiership will make the current rep footy setup even more untenable - and it's best to get on the front foot and sort out a structure that can accomodate the future of the competition.

Respectfully no.

You might be happy with the current system and that's perfectly fine, but myself and a lot of other people including Wayne Bennett aren't happy with the current system and want change.
You and Wayne Bennett? Wow!

Just have the 3 origins in June suspend the season for 3 weeks and have 9s, women's, a touch league etc etc and give it some cool name like college basketballs "March Madness" so June Jibber fest or something (I'll come up with something better later after I've had a mushy).

Is origin the behemoth it once was though? Obviously, I can only speak of my own observations on it but its gone from everyone talking about it in the lead up and days after to now more like oh is origin on tonight, I might watch the first half and go to bed.

If we're discussing ideas for change though, instead of shutting the season for 3 weeks straight what about having the origin games every 3 or 4 weeks and stopping the regular competition that weekend. Still drags on a bit but stops teams having to play weakened squads.

Dunno really, just a thought.

Having it standalone is one option but you can still condense it to 3 weeks and have the NRL continue.

The best idea I've heard so far is in an 18 team comp have one round split over those 3 weekends so 3 games each week. That means you could satisfy the channel 9 contract and every team has one game without origin players.

You could do it like that.

Standalone should be the aim. Its the fairest option in the end. The sticking point will keep being season length. When you slap on international football as well it's very difficult.

20 teams 20 rounds with 3 for Origin. Sits fine with me. 10 weeks straight with the Origin sandwich. The 10th game of the first half of the season would suddenly be a huge round of football. You'd have everyone busting it because you are either playing Origin or getting a few weeks off.

I'm happy for you. Unfortunately for you though you're going to keep hearing this every year until it changes ;)

Exhibition games? In soccer. you obviosuly dodn't understand why most of the European football sides (e.g. Liverpool, Man Utd, Bayern Mucih, Real Madrid, Barcelona) nash there teeth during FIFA rep breaks. They have to make players available for rep sides, and all league competitions are suspended when those mandatory breaks occur. Its part of FIFA's legislation which effects all members in the entire football world regardless of what the clubs with the money (namely the European clubs) want. Most of those FIFA mandated rep windows only see national sides playing - friendlies.

So you really are making a poor comparison.
