Origins a drag on the Comp

I do think this thread shows, again, a major issue with the NRL.

A large portion of the fanbase are completely change averse. Even talking about potential ways to improve both Origin and the NRL season proper generate howls of derision or just straight up resistance.

Origin hasn't evolved with the rest of the NRL, except to devolve further into a teledrama, and it risks becoming a sideshow. TV audiences only matter as far as they matter, what else is there to watch on a Wednesday night for a footy fan?
This is f**king insane.

"It's hugely popular, but so what.?"

It's also cooked to think Origin hasn't gone through any change since it started in 1980.

It's been played on every night of the week, played stand alone, played in the off season, played in Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide etc.

It's a showpiece event that attracts new audiences to the game every year.

Instead of trying to drag it, why not push for other games to reach its level.

There are clubs, coaches, and a lot of fans that aren't happy with the current system so you can't just dismiss them as if their opinions don't matter. The fact is the current system whilst ideal for broadcasters, devalues the NRL competition for months and is unfair to clubs and fans.

What about those NZ Rugby League fans who missed out on the chance to watch the best player in the competition play live this year because he couldn't make the trip due to Origin? Or Bathurst?

I'm just glad we have someone like Wayne Bennett speaking up about it. Clubs need to fire up’: Bennett’s 24-day plan to fix Origin crisis.

Congratulations, you've missed the point so hard the thud you made registered on the Richter scale.

A club coach not supporting rep footy what a shock.

You want the Melbourne Cup to be devalued so people can be enthused by Doomben

And yet the women and coaches in both camps criticised their origin series being played outside of their normal season.

Samoa has played the 2023 Pacific Championships and toured England since the 2022 World Cup, 4 tests in total.

They'll play another three minimum this year as part of the 2025 Pacific Championships.

My mistake but the point still stands, even if we count the 3 games they'll play this year that's just 7 games across 3 years, for a player that becomes very hard to prioritise whilst if it was for example 21 games across those 3 years it becomes easier to prioritise the national team.

You would still have 80% of the comp not playing.

Clubs aren't going for that.

They actually did this concept in 2019, Origin was in Perth on the Sunday and the Saturday played host to PNG Vs Samoa, Fiji Vs Lebanon, New Zealand Vs Tonga and then the Origin game was on the Sunday.

All teams were at full strength barring injury and eligible Origin players I guess. I don't think the clubs should have much say over it all but if they do they shouldn't.

They had it for multiple seasons, it was great.

But everyone, including the majority of LU cracked the shits about there not being enough NRL on, and ARLC folded and changed it

Leave it as it is.
If you can't wear a loss over a whole season then you don't deserve to win the comp.
If you can' embrace the opportunity to bloood some inexperienced players due to origin then you should not be coaching NRL.
What's bennett care anyway his team isn't losing because of origin they are losing because they are shit

The irony is that when the Origin concept was first introduced in 1980, people were panning it because "no way can you pit team-mates against each other and expect a fair-dinkum contest"...

Australia is full of people who hate change. It's why we have so many nimby's in this country unfortunately. Just need to ignore them and keep pushing.

You seem very upset I have an opinion different to yours. I hope you are okay ?

Am I? I think that was the first time I responded to you in this thread tbh. I'm not sure if that qualifies as being upset. And I'm not the one calling people they disagree with twats, either.

I don't even know what your opinion is to be fair, old mate. Seems to just be something about current TV viewing numbers meaning Origin can never be questioned, improved, or better managed.
