The only positive thought I can take out of this situation at this stage is that the previous time something like this happened in the big league, it was John Farragher, a Panther, who went on to make a life for himself, in business.

I'm hoping that Alex gets through this and can at least live a life that he once knew, but if he can't, I hope he can draw inspiration from those who have before him suffered the same ill fate.

Suity

Straw Andrew was another. He broke his neck playing for Easts in 1962.
We had a young bloke out here who became a quad after being injured in a match at Ivanhoe.
He has made a life for himself with strong help from his family and friends and also the community.
It will be very important for Alex family and friends to maintain a positive attitude.

AND I hope Jordan McLean is OK too. Must be devastating for him as well

On abc radio this afo on their news they report that his condition is consistent with a quadriplegic injury - they sourced the report to one of Alex's medical advisors.

Regardless of whether the reports are true or not, journalists have no moral right to make public any diagnosis without the blessing of McKinnon's family.

while morally that may be true you'd have to ask the question - who provided them the info in the first place?

the other thing is that it has got people's attention and everyone talking about it. we can bag the media for putting it out there but at the end of the day the fact that we are all talking about it justifies their reasoning for putting it out there. the reality of it is that everyone's outrage about this is being by fuelled by their wanting to know the details and the progress of the situation.

i love when people from the tele start lecturing on what is correct journalism

yeah they shouldn't have said anything without talking to the right people, but they weren't trying to do any harm

they sell more papers if they dramatise the incidents

the truth never really bothers too many journos, if it did they wouldn't have a job

How do you sensationalize a puplic sports person who has been diagnosed as quadriplegic?

If it is bogus or a sick play on the truth, then its time for the source (ch9?) to be sued off the planet

the diagnosis is based on his condition TODAY in these very sensitive cases the last thing the doctors want to do is raise false hope so they are very matter of fact in what they say to the patient but he has not had any treatment from the spinal unit yet so it is very very premature to say he will never walk again (if that is what was said)

I don't think the guy deserved 7 weeks. It was an unfortunate event but I didn't see a whole lot wrong with the tackle to be honest.

7 weeks is tough, but it's a lifting tackle and that's against the rules. I think 3-4 weeks would have been sufficient given the circumstances, but I can't blame the judiciary for their sentence.

Anything more than 2 weeks is madness.

You can't judge foul play based on the severity of the injury and emotion & sentiment.

It has to be black and white.

The NRL judiciary has come out of this looking pretty amateurish IMO.

McLean contributed to the tackle but he wasn't the sole contributor. It is unfortunate that he has copped seven weeks for his involvement. The area in which the NRL have erred is to not punish previous tackles in the same manner. The spear on Inglis only warranted four weeks and should have been much longer. Any lifting tackle should be heavily punished as we now see what the end result could well be.

I feel sorry for McLean and hope he gets plenty of counselling as it is quite obvious he is struggling with what happened and honestly the seven weeks away from a football field is probably a blessing in disguise.

I hope Melbourne just cop the result and move on. It doesn't help him to drag it back through an appeal process.

At the end of the day there are two lives at stake and that is bigger than what happens on the field.

Some of you guys are wrong to say that he didn't deserve 7 weeks. FMD, he got off lightly IMHO.

He was not blameless (he had a hand between McKinnon's legs and was the one who lifted him) and his actions contributed to the injury.

The case may very well pan out that the injured player is deemed to have also contributed to his own injury in some way (queue the bio-mechanic and human movement experts) but this does not in any way exonerate McLean.

It is my understanding that Storm are keen to appeal to a watered down charge as it will help Mclean etc when (not if) McKinnon takes civil action against him, the club and the NRL .
