It's hard enough to change someone's mind about footy matters.
Basically impossible to change them about politics.

agree, we've become so divided now much like America where our views on certain issues are totally based on whether we are left or right wing

it really is sad to see this happening to our country

I really hope we don't see a convicted rapist and felon running our country because RWNJs don't care about whether their preferred leader is a convict or not, as long as he is right wing as that is where we seem to be heading

Doubt that would ever happen.
The people over there get to directly vote for who they want to be their leader.
We on the other hand just vote for one MP and the parties choose the leader. I can't see a party ever choosing someone with that kind of rap sheet.

If the Republican party itself was the one choosing the nominee, they probably would never have chosen Trump to begin with.

yes - if your identity is being an arch-conservative nothing is going to convince you to not support arch-conservative politicians no matter how dodgy they are

that is true
the Democrats seem to have some sort of system where party officials get more voting rights making it harder for non-establishment candidates to get nominated e.g. Bernie Sanders
It might have saved them from some duds in the past e.g. when Donald Trump was a democrat - but it also gave them some poor candidates

I would like to think it would never happen, I think there is a difference in intelligence between Aussies and the Septics as well as the fact that we have a different voting system.

There are still quiet a lot of Aussies who base their vote on which team they support rather than vote on their local issues, so I think there is some similarity.

I used to be a swing voter years ago.
These days the Libs have gone too far to the right for me to ever vote for them. I liked Turnbull and thought he was doing a decent job, but obviously he wasn't far enought right for the Libs.

The Greens are a bit too left on a few things. Labor seems stuck in the middle these days or just slightly left of it.

Unlike the American parties which are either right or far right.

There' probably are political parties that have nut jobs running and just as nutty voting for them.

But I would hope there is enough normal people that wouldn't vote that way in the year 2025

Well we do still have Clive Palmer and Pauline Hanson.
Luckily their influence is minimal.

That's not a great post to illustrate the "intelligence" of Aussie's.... assuming you are an Aussie....
