I've spent years fantasizing about a day where Labor and LNP both lost so many seats that they couldn't form a majority gov with the help of any of the also rans/ independents.

Yesterday the crushing truth came to me. I asked myself if they'd actually form a coalition between themselves (Labor/LNP) to retain power?
That chat would last less than 5 mins I reckon. One day in the not too distant future I can see a LLNP coalition forming gov in this country. They won't call it that of course.
I wonder what they will call it?

they do agree on 90% of legislation
I don't think that they would have a coalition as I think their only purpose is to "win" - they would rather be in opposition and white ant the other for 3 years than share

they agree on stuff that keeps the 2 party system entrenched. I reckon the LNP are more comfortable fighting against the ALP as they are a known entity than against other unknown quantities

It sure is a funny game, politics. Slightly less than half of parliaments only job is to oppose everything the gov comes up with. Until of course something equally self serving to both comes a long and then they all can finally agree. To keep the imbos impressed they call it bipartisanship and we all get to have a democratic happy clap as "progress" has finally been made. Yaaaaay.

In this fantasy scenario, I think it only works if the Libs get to drop the dead weight carcass of the Nationals as part of the deal. They hate each other, and if the Nationals are no longer needed as the only hope for a majority the Libs would drop them in a hot minute,

But another potential dream world scenario to ponder could be if Labor form a Coalition with the Nationals instead... leaving the Libs out in the electoral cold?

That's why Lib leaders (like Turnbull) traditionally need to be really careful where they tread - they couldn't afford for the Nats to be offside, because without the N part of LNP, the Libs don't ever have the numbers for majority government.

Dutton doing the scare campaign on ABC..”..and if your home goes down $500,000 under labor … because they were in charge when we last had a recession…. and there is talk now of a further recession under Anthony Albanese….”

Orange guy stacks the Supreme Court so he can do as he pleases. Deports the wrong person and his Supreme Court (equivalent to our High Court) says find him and bring him back. Orange guy says, make me.

Right now in AU, the Governor General can step in use his reserve powers to dismiss the PM and his government. I don't know if they have any mechanism in the USA if a merkin goes rogue. They have impeachment, but as it has been shown previously that can be knocked on the head as simple as your own party having the numbers voting against it.
