Mental Health

On a sadder note, the hobo who lived in a concrete cave near work has been evicted.

They actually put up a fence so he can’t hide in there on cold nights.

He never gave anyone any trouble and if you said “ Hello” he would say “Hello” back. Never drunk or disorderly and he hung his stuff up neatly.

And the nice space, there’s nothing in it now. Probably fit a sedan and a half in it.

He might come home tonight only to find himself locked out.

He might find a car park stairwell I guess. Not the best life being homeless.

Since the lockdowns and all the forced jabs, the world feels like it’s taken a turn for the worse. I just don’t get excited about things like I used to — most of the time I feel indifferent. I keep thinking I should be happier. Maybe it’s time to start living in the moment more… and maybe even bring cognac back into the mix.

Life is what you make of it. If you are not feeling fulfilled, change it.

I get that. I just try and focus on what is important. In some ways I went the other way. Aggressive with my career and climbing the ladder before and less so now.

Maybe it’s coincidence and COVID has nothing to do with it but these days I feel like I am a bit more balanced.

Work life balance. Perfect.

You really should be doing that anyway, every day.

Bingo.

Should if we could. Life in Sydney gets in the way.
Sydney life overrated. So glad I got out of there in 2004... then after coming back in 2009 again glad to move away again (for good) in 2017.

If work ties you there then fair enough I guess. But not knowing exactly what you do for a career, there's so many things that can be done remotely these days... or just with a little occasional travel from say Southern Highlands, Wollongong/South Coast line, Central Coast/Newcastle.

But if not, just stay focussed on that light at the end of the ten year tunnel.

Thanks mate. The only reason I’m still working is to help the kids. I don’t have to work anymore to be honest. I could retire tomorrow and live comfortably. Hopefully it’s in the Byron Shire not the Sutherland Shire.

If you're trapped, then get out of there, that's what I did.
Yeah it's not worth it.

I used to work 7am to 7pm and I was a stress ball. Now I work 9am to 4pm and don't go in to the office if I am not feeling it. Crazy thing is that I am not turning over any less. Clients adapt and respect it. Even if I was to earn less, we decided that there is little point in burning yourself out where it compromises your (physical and mental) health.

I have mates who still work like they are 27. That's crazy from my perspective, but maybe they thrive on it or they find themselves in a vicious financial circle. I think some of them are led by the expectations of their back slapping fellow suits at Ryans Bar @ Australia Square on a Friday night. Work hard play hard etc.

I can’t yet mate. Work is the priority and I’m 10 years away from retirement.

and you might be in the bird cage by then, a dollar is only worth a dollar and sometimes tomorrow doesn't come

you can easily live an hour north or south of the big smoke and work there, or even work more from home

life's too short to not enjoy the now

I have a get together at Ryan’s Bar every Xmas with my ‘old school’ friends.

But you're still getting a purpose from work yeah? Whilst at the same time contributing a service to society. That's something to be proud of.
Chasing and reaching goals is important. But the best part thats often overlooked is the person you become along the way. Working hard, stress, pushing yourself builds character and mental strength. I think it also helps you relate to others on a personal level better too.
