OT: Employment struggle

With the greatest of respect STG666, it has nothing to do with our season but it does have something to do with our brotherhood.

Ah that a sexist remark if ever I've ever seen one ;-)

In response to HDF

I tend to agree with Johnsy in that you need to look beyond your field or at least make your options as broad as possible

Consider applying for a post graduate degree and try to pick up some part-time work at your uni of choice. If I was wanting to pursue a career in environmental science I'd consider an MBA. Marketing is going to be a necessary asset for you to have unless you stick to academia

Gainful employment for many is going to be harder in the future as the cloud introduces virtual aliens as competitors for local jobs. IT, finance and retail sectors are all feeling the pinch and it's going to get worse

Good luck mate!

...

hah hah.

I could say I was using it in the generic (and inclusive) sense ... like "mankind".

But OK, I won't.
Got me!
I will edit it to "sisterhood and brotherhood".

Sorry SS or DL or ......

hod.

PS - In the same vein as "their, there, they're and thurr - in another post), is there a difference between sistahood and sisterhood??

Thanks. Unfortunately, my resume has been polished by a professor at JCU careers administration. They said my resume or a CV is now good. Then I added an international company on my jobs list because I worked in Utah. I thought that would have increased chances because of international employment experience.

I have two qualifications from uni, that is enough as a postgraduate certificate to be honest! So, I have no idea where to find entry level jobs?

I would appreciate if anyone could hand out some of the entry level jobs in environmental science and sustainability related field? This includes entry level graduate position too. Thanks.

Find an entry level position at any city or shire council in Australia. Once you establish your self as competent you can start going above and beyond and contributing your knowledge of Environment/Sutainability to more senior members in that councils planning department. ANY work, even outside of the role you are employed in but relevent to your professional field is a huge step forward. You may not be able to mention the relevent role in you're next application but you can certainly mention the experience in a cover letter and gain a valuable reference or two along the way.

Good luck mate

Some great advice on here Hardcore. My sibling works in the field and had to move OS to get a start, and even with 10+ yrs experience finds it hard to get a job back here in Aus. Seems they are after PhD or 'hardcore' research masters, especially within government organisations where the old dogs hang around until retirement. Like others have suggested I'd pick up whatever related work you can find and do a very focused postgrad program when you find an area that's right for you. As for work, would you be interested in field work? Big business as many developments require ecological surveys to be undertaken. Know many that got their foot in this way and doing very well now - although one bloke reckons he had to measure 250,000 prawns and lower himself to measuring the width of a fishes anus. Could put you in touch with a mate if you live, or can travel for work in Northern NSW/SE Queensland. PM me if you want you want to find out more.

Getting a job is a job.

Chin up, keep trying.

I have a friend who topped her class in Uni, did her masters & couldnt find a job for 6 months out of Uni.

So you are not alone in your struggle.

You will get there eventually. Never give up.

I think I shouldn't keep going. Lot of people started to point out that I still have writing issues after I graduated last year. The effects of my hearing loss has put in place of slow learning development. So, I shouldn't apply those jobs at all otherwise it is going to be worse for all. Getting fired for slow learning grammar or whatever you call.

So, looks like it going to take me another five or ten years for me to get all of my writing catch up with you guys. I can tell I will live in a ghetto with centrelink yet again.....life comes back to the old......

No sorry. I don't use multiple website pages to own. I only use Facebook that is all.

Linkedin is what gets me most of my opportunities, generally most jobs come to me, rather than me look for them. Just hit up lots of agencies, make friends on linkedin with as many people as you can who are in the industry, and all the agencies. Ensure you have all the keywords in your profile, so when people do a search looking for people, they have you come up as a hit.

It's not a lot of effort, and it's not like facebook where you have to post a lot or anything. Just set your profile to provide emails when someone contacts you. Set and forget.

As for your situation, don't lock yourself into only one option for a career, you can in the meantime pickup some other work you can do, even if it's just stacking shelves at Coles. You can still look for work in the field you want, but in the meantime you have an income coming up, you feel good about yourself cause you are working, and are socialising, not to mention you are still learning things like team work, delegation etc, which all helps you once you do get a job in the field you want. It's also something to pull out experience wise in an interview regarding how you went above and beyond at deal with a situation etc, cause you gained that experience in another role.

I've employed many a person because they had done lots of varied roles, which showed that had a can do attitude, were very adaptable, could think outside the square and gained life experience through those roles. Generally they were also the most popular workers too because they could demonstrate that through actions in the workplace. You appreciate what a good job you have, when you have done something much worse.

f**k that mate. Keep your head up, get some money coming in, and keeping working on it. Sure you are aware some of us need to try much harder to get ahead, and think you've already shown you can made the grade. Ultimately have to pay for the 'gap year' thing but the financial situation will eventually come good quick once you get some money coming in. Gave a good suggestion earlier (field work is the NYC of environmental scientists), but also thought worth looking at the NPWS/Landcare types. Traditionally a good foot in the door and chance to earn some relevant practical experience/certificates that are easier to fall back on.
