In recognition of the strength of the relationship between the club and its principal partner, the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have adopted the Kaspersky Sea Eagles as their official title.
Kaspersky Lab has been a loyal and valued partner since joining the club in 2011, with the world-leading IT security software company this year affirming their passion for the Sea Eagles by signing on as long-term principal partner.
The extended corporate relationship will see Kaspersky Lab featured on the front of Sea Eagles home and away jerseys until at least 2015 and now the team will also be referred to as the Kaspersky Sea Eagles.
Sea Eagles General Manager David Perry said the club is pleased to have the opportunity to recognise the invaluable support and faith of its principal partner.
"We are proud to be so closely associated with such an internationally respected brand," Perry said."Having the support of Kaspersky in the long-term is a huge boost for the club. They are an integral part of the Manly team and having their name in the team's title gives them well-deserved acknowledgement."
Managing Director of Kaspersky Lab Australia and New Zealand, Andrew Mamonitis says the move signals their strong affiliation with the club.
“We are very excited about expanding our relationship with the Sea Eagles. We are strong Manly supporters and are passionate about the game."
Embarrassed Manly-Warringah officials have been forced to clarify the details of a sponsorship deal amid fears the famous club were about to drop their official title to include the sponsor's name.
Manly sent out a press release at 4.58pm Sydney time on Monday declaring they would be renamed the Kaspersky Sea Eagles in acknowledgment of their chief sponsor.
"We are proud to be so closely associated with such an internationally respected brand," CEO David Perry declared.
"Having the support of Kaspersky in the long-term is a huge boost for the club. They are an integral part of the Manly team and having their name in the team's title gives them well-deserved acknowledgement."
The ambiguous press release hinted that the club were planning to drop 'Manly-Warringah' from their title and insert Kaspersky's name, sending fans into a frenzy.
The NRL club have been known as the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles since their inception in 1947.
Celebrity supporter Tim Bailey spoke for many when he tweeted: "Kaspersky Sea Eagles. Plain ridiculous. What a croc."
Less than two hours after their original press release and with the NRL seeking answers, the Sea Eagles sent out another email clarifying the details behind the name change.
The statement read: "Sorry for the confusion in regards to the club's title. Kaspersky Sea Eagles will be used internally and in corporate communications purely as a sponsor benefit for our principal partner.
"There's no intention to change the club's traditional title."
The confusion and controversy over the sponsorship arrangement comes just a week after Canberra officials expressed frustration at Manly's dwindling enthusiasm in playing a NRL match in China next year.
Round 11 had been pencilled in by both sides and had the backing of NRL officials and the clubs' main sponsors, but the match now appears highly unlikely to go ahead due to the Sea Eagles' indifference.
Canberra are angered over what they perceive as a lack of support from Manly.
Aren't we already the "Pirtek Parramatta Eels"?
Why can't Moanly be the "Kaspersky Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles".
Yes
They can be, but they are not, they will call themselves the "Kaspersky Sea Eagles", internally and in corporate communications.
I think the point is that they were to become the "Kaspersky Sea Eagles" not the "Kaspersky Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles"
I would be happy if we called ourselves the Crazy Johns Eels. Who gives a f**k about tradition. It's all about the coin.
