Leah O’Brien was the jnr who broke Rayelene Boyle’s record in the U20 final. Amazing that she made it to the seniors final and then was in a photo finish for podium.

Gout Gout has clocked the fastest 200 metres of his young career, but wind proved to be his enemy at the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth.

I think we’re unlucky he wasn’t. Was a brilliant final. Add Gout Gout & Seb Sultana to it. We may never see another Olympic medal but we’ve got some crazy competition running at the moment. Gout and Kennedy will be at Stawell next week

This yank is heavily into all things sprinting. He called early GG reports as hype. After the AU Champs this weekend, he posted this.

Female Stawell Gift final has been set. Gee some of the handicaps are fierce. Some girls starting off 0m (olympians) and their competitors (teenagers, novices, semi pros) off 11m. That’s a huge head start across 120m.

Men’s Semis are about to start.

Both Kennedy and GG got beat in their semi. The Handicaps were way to hard to claw back.

Six semi finals, each winner gets a start in the final.

It’s been going over 100 years. These meets are for Phil the plumber who still runs 12 secs flat and trains with a run club. Phil trains just as hard as the best,p lus works 5 days a week.

I guess they are no different to the gallops when they put extra weight in the saddle of the favs.

To counter the argument, the ladies event was won by Rizzo off 0m at the back and she gave 10 or 11m start to those on her right. She won the $40k cash prize. It was a rare win for an Olympic ranked runner off scratch.

To piss you off more, the backmarker final was mixed 4 girls 4 men and the handicaps were huge. The women maybe had 20m start. Gout came 2nd last in that as he started off 0.5m.

I think that if the handicaps are done right, anyone can win, IF they run out of their skin.

Anyway, these gift events don’t replace the normal track n field events for the elites, they are just sometimes frequented by the elite because $$$.
