Rouse Hill Rhinos walk out on Parramatta

THE Rouse Hill Rhinos Rugby League Club is in a crisis after their senior team disbanded mid-season last week leaving them without any representation in the Parramatta first division competition.
The move, which followed 16 straight losses - including scores of more than 50 points against them - has prompted senior Rhinos and club vice-president Rees Leyshon to move to Riverstone to play in the Penrith second division competition.
Regular players, Brent McDonald, Gary Howle and Daniel Hutton said they were humiliated by the one-sided defeats. McDonald said it was “degrading to be a part of this situation where we sometimes even fielded just 10 players”.
The club, which moved into their impressive home ground at Kellyville only last year, has also seen their under-17 team fold recently.
Leyshon, who has been involved in coaching for more than four decades, said the club is being unfairly targeted by the Parramatta District Junior Rugby League.
“This is the most unfair thing I have seen in this sport in 40-odd years,” he told the Times.
“We are not fit to play in the first division and we have many injuries and no reserves left.
“We wrote to the Parramatta league requesting them to demote us as we were getting flogged in all games.
“But they said they won’t do it and questioned our intentions.
“I am prepared to resign any involvement in the Parramatta Junior League, leaving the under-9s and under-15s without a coach.”
He said he would also return $30,000 in sponsorship.
Parramatta District Junior Rugby League executive officer Terry Rose told the Times the Rhinos are being “deceitful” after they quit the premiership.
“We believe they (the Rhinos first division side) are being deceitful though we don’t have anything against the club,” he said.
“We helped them to get the new grounds and this time last year they loved us.
“I didn’t make this decision on my own, it was made by the nine-member committee.
“They attempted to leave the district at the commencement of the season.
“They say their players are being regularly injured but we have no record of their players being injured.
“They have forfeited two matches, including the last one before the game with 13 players. We will be fining the club for this.
“There is more to this issue. I think they just want to win a premiership.”

I played for North Ryde Hawks in the 90's and we got pumped by 50 every game, should have taken my bat and ball and went home too.

Maybe you should have used that bat on the opposition ? ;-)

50! thats nothing i played in under 15's for Windsor we were promoted to Div1 coz we won div 2 in the 14's the year before but we had our 2 best players pouched by St Marys and had to play most games with 11 or 12 players and had 80 points put past us every week. Got saved by a wrist injury and missed a few games as well making the team even shorter. We also sent a letter preseason to the Penrith Junior League listing the players that left and how we only had 12 registered players and asked to be Div 2 but no they wouldn't budge. Most of the players that year never played again turned them off the game.

the PJRL seems to be becoming like the premier league in that a couple of strong clubs take all the good players leaving the rest to cop flogging after flogging and lose the players they did have due to this.
I was involved in Merrylands for 20 years (where Terry was secretary before taking up the Parramatta posting) and they have gone from fielding 18 teams to only 5 in just a few years.
Unless you are Cabra or Wenty you don't seem to matter

Very true. Especially after last weeks debacle, it just proves what a mess we are in.

I think Terry Rose is trying to do the right thing, but Paul Osbourne keeps buckling to Wenty and the like.

My nephew plays in the Canterbury comp, and they have merged with Souths and balmain, just to keep playing, because there arent enough teams spread over the comp, instead they are at 1 or 2 major clubs.

Something needs to be done before the parra comp ends up merging with others

There are a lot of arseholes in junior sport.

The big fish in a small pond syndrome. These people screw it up for the kids.

This sort of thing is across all junior sport - league, and PDJRL are not on their own.

We suffered the same problem in the U14s in 1999, we got flogged by 50 or more when we got promoted in Division 1, against the top sides St Doms (now known as the Brothers), Pats Blacktown, Blacktown City, St Marys.

We were actually promoted about 4 weeks into the season, underfeated, 3 wins and a draw, but our wins were tough wins, I think only one game was a 30 point margain.

Our team suffered injuries, players poached by other clubs, in the end we had to get guys from U12s and 13s and their teams become non existent.

Another problem we suffered was a few years later, when they said U17s was to play on Sunday afternoon. Some of the young kids would either be working or wouldnt want to play Sundays cause of church or going to the NRL games.

Now I dont know whats changed in the last 10-12 years, but back then kids just wanted to play footy and stuff like this turned them away from the game.

Nothing has changed, kids still want to keep playing, but the politics f**k it up for everyone.

Last weekend, under 12's, 15's and 17's first division comp, was put on hold, friday evening.

The reason being was because that wentworthville had 3 teams in the above age groups, from division 2 put up to division 1.

Wenty appealed the decision to Terry Rose, and he knocked them back. They then appealed to Paul Osbourne, and he called a halt to the comp. 1 wonders who is actually running the comp, the eels or wenty.

When their teams are dishing out the 50 plus scorelines, they are content, but when the shoe is on the other foot, its a different story.

Bit childish on osbourne's part with the 'idiotic' paragraph but given some of his public comments on other matters in the past it doesn't surprise me.

I won't go into the finer details.. but...

The Regradings of PDJRL sides are done at the end of Round 4 so as to give and idea of what a team's performance may be like.

The committee that assesses all regrade applications is made up of Board of Management members, Board of Advisory members and several Club delegates (Presidents or Secreataries).

Up until 2010 we had the rights for all clubs to appeal, however this system was used by a big name club which in turn reversed a decision that was quite rightly made to promote their NSW Cup / Bundy Red Cup strength alleged Division 2 PDJRL side to be moved back from Div 1 to Div 2 where they enjoyed many huge thrashings.

Sadly, the Junior League is being dictated to by 2 Clubs who both have major financial backers in the District Club at NSW Cup & as a sponsor of the Eels who are threatening further sanctions if they aren't molly cuddled into what they want.

There have been numerous decisions overturned that because of 1 club in particular.. most notably the Board of Managements attempt to limit the amount of poaching that 1 club is doing and in turn killing of many of the smaller district clubs in the process. When you see that small clubs who can't afford to offer the same level of coaching and support who struggle to field even 1 Under 11's side and then a club with money no less than 5kms down the road who have just so happened to sign up alot of these ex players into 3rd & 4th Under 11 sides, that truly is sad.

In a junior league conference in 2010 where all clubs attended, a motion was put forward whereby Clubs would have their team numbers progressively limited down to 3 sides per age group over a number years (allowing for natural attrition). This was voted by all clubs except 2 - that means 21 of 23 clubs supported the motion.

When it was adopted, a certain big NSW Cup represented club went running to the District club and needless to say the decision was torpedoed by the District Club, only problem being we still don't know who made the decision, i.e. District Board or a self appointed decision by the CEO.

The problem is quite simple. The CEO and board are so scared of losing support by a certain Big Club as well as an Eels sleeve sponsor, that they are impeding on the great work of the Junior league which has progressively grown over the last 10 years.

If you want more info, feel free to ask me in private message.

My understanding on the matter, is that the all the clubs under the parramatta district, bar 2 of them, voted for each club to only field a maximum of 2 teams per age group.

Terry rose agreed, and this I believe was meant to start this year. Wenty and cabra appealed, and threatened with legal action, allowing for 1 paul osbourne to intervene and overturn the ruling, much to the disappointment of the remaining clubs.

It won't be long before our juniours merge comps with other districts. If SK is serious about stemming the flow of lost juniors, then it has to start from the very bottom.

where is the footy club board in all this?

Isn't this their jurisdiction, as they have no control over the NRL side or are they just running the rep sides?
