OT: Sharks man Towke was a rabid Dog

CONTROVERSIAL Liberal candidate Michael Towke is a man who likes to change teams well before half-time.
Mr Towke's preselection endorsement has been postponed for a week to clarify allegations that he misled the party about his membership of the Australian Labor Party.
The drama over his preselection for the southern Sydney seat of Cook has plunged Prime Minister John Howard into a new political crisis.
No one has asked Mr Towke which football team he follows. On his Liberal nomination form, he proudly proclaims membership of the Cronulla Sharks football and leagues club, which he joined in 2004.
Yet nowhere is there any mention of his pivotal role with the infamous Bulldogs Army. Two years earlier, however, he was a frontline warrior for the army.
Mr Towke, then known as Taouk, made headlines as a bit player in the Bulldogs salary cap scandal.
Described as a Bulldogs Army commander, he led a vocal section of supporters who collected signatures to force the resignation of Bulldogs Leagues Club president Gary McIntyre in 2002.
Mr McIntyre resigned as president after a week of damaging publicity about his involvement in the club's million-dollar breach of the NRL's salary cap in the previous two seasons. He had already resigned as chairman of the Oasis joint venture vehicle.
The news will surprise many in the Sutherland Shire, who often refer to themselves as living in God's Country. God usually takes up a position either on the hill or a box seat to watch the Sharks play - and the team they loathe the most is the Bulldogs.
Asked about Mr Towke's involvement with the Bulldogs Army, Sharks president Barry Pierce said it was "interesting".
Mr Towke failed to return phone calls from The Sun-Herald.
ALP frontbencher Anthony Albanese yesterday said the Liberal Party in NSW was in meltdown over the Cook preselection.

Easy to campaign against

A one line slogan of fact will kill him off

"This man was formerly known as Taouk. Vote for him at your peril"

I have no idea who sent me this.

Beige was no defence against blue and white

Units of the Bulldog Army came hunting Gary McIntyre yesterday.
"Is he here? He could be in there. They've got back entrances, you know," said Daniel Cureton, 21, of Picnic Point.
"He's to blame for all this. He's got to go."
But with the Bulldogs Leagues Club's beige-suited security apparatus fanning out on the other side of the building's glass walls, others urged caution.
"You're not going to do anything stupid when he gets here," said Mohammed Farhad, 15, of Punchbowl.
"No, mate," said Mr Cureton, taking a position to the side of the entrance, where a fountained moat with a sign - "WARNING: do not enter water. Sharp objects exist" - fronts the clubhouse.
Mohammed spoke of popular support for action against Mr McIntyre, even among the Raiders' fans.
"There has been a huge unfairness. We went around at Bruce Stadium collecting signatures for petitions calling on McIntyre to resign and for the NRL to reduce our punishment, and they were saying, 'Where do we sign?'
"Anyway, someone will bring the petition later and we will serve it to them," Mohammed said. The reams of signatures arrived in the early afternoon, carried by the Bulldog Army commander, black-clad Michael Taouk, 27, of Redfern, who drew up the petitions.
"McIntyre must go. We only need 100 Bulldogs members' signatures to call an extraordinary general meeting for the dismissal of McIntyre, and we've got 230," Mr Taouk said.
Brandishing the terms of surrender, Mr Taouk appealed for two neutral witnesses to enter the clubhouse with him. A pair of reporters were willing, and the group walked slowly and carefully through the revolving doors.
"I'd like to deliver this to John Ballesty [general manager of the Leagues Club]," said Mr Taouk to the beige squad.
The head of security offered to accept the demands for delivery to Mr Ballesty "when I see him".
"No, thanks," said Mr Taouk, stepping away from the negotiations. "I don't trust him."
Back outside, word came that Mr McIntyre would face the crowd at 4pm.
The mood in the ranks grew tense, expectant. As 4pm approached the weather was clearing.
Then the hunted leader appeared, flanked by men as wide as they were tall (and they were tall).
His eyes were bloodshot. He walked slowly, rubbing his nose.
Mr McIntyre read his statement and it was all over. One soldier whooped, but the others were grimly resolved. One way or another their goal had been achieved.
And lo! A rainbow blazed over Belmore.
