It's not for charity. The main advertising point of the game was that smith and Thurston were going to profit from it

According to the NRL, the only players who currently qualify for a testimonial game are Smith, Thurston, Slater, Simon Mannering and, hilariously, Sam Thaiday.

However:

"The nominees must have played at least 250 NRL games and spent a minimum 10 years at their club. They have to also have played State of Origin or Tests, and have near-unblemished records both on and off the field"

So how do Smith and Slater qualify given the cap scandal? They knowingly signed two contracts ffs

By that rationale, Simon Mannering is the only player to qualify for a testimonial game.
