Titans step up campaign for Boyd

David Beniuk

April 16, 2011

Gold Coast will step up negotiations with off-contract St George Illawarra star Darius Boyd in the next week.

Boyd is widely tipped to follow Dragons coach Wayne Bennett to Newcastle next year but was a Gold Coast junior and has expressed a desire to one day return to south-eastern Queensland.

"We have expressed interest to Darius's management and from our point of view we understand Darius would consider coming back to the Gold Coast," Titans chief executive Michael Searle told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

"We are looking to move forward with negotiations over the next week or so."

Boyd, who played under Bennett at Brisbane before following him south, also hasn't ruled out remaining with the Dragons.

The 23-year-old Clive Churchill Medallist said on Saturday he was yet to make a decision.

"Wayne only made the decision a few days ago," Boyd told the DMG radio network.

"I've always said I'd like to be coached under him as long as I could but I haven't really had a chance to think about it that much myself either.

"I suppose in the next few weeks I'm going to make a decision."

The Titans have already snared Canterbury star Jamal Idris on a five-year deal from 2012.

Bennett said Boyd would make his own call on his future.

"Darius, like me, is at the Dragons right now and Darius is his own man," Bennett told DMG.

"He'll make his own decisions."

But the supercoach shut down any discussion of his intentions at the Knights, saying he would not speak about his new club until he finishes the 2011 season with St George Illawarra.

"My job is to build football teams, not destroy them, and by me continually referring to one that I'm going to doesn't help anybody and it certainly doesn't help the one that I'm at," he said.

The Titans are very suss.

If they sign some of these players they are apparently after it will just confirm that the salary cap is a joke.

They are well under the cap presently & will have lots of room next year with quite a few leaving.
Sharks should be targetting Tonga.

Isn't Douglas signed for next year?

If so any approaches are illegal, just like the Nate Myles approach.

He is off contract. Or at least I think he may have an option in his favour for next year which is basically off contract.

Can they get anyone else Ayoub is manager for?

Pretty scummy person to be so heavily involved with.

As Idris will tell you he's going up there because of the centre of excellence.

Boyd wants to go because he wants to see his family more often.

It's not about the money and it's not about the beautiful new home you get built for you....ummmm....oops!

Bingo DS, how much smoke can be around one place before there is fire

It's only a rort if your not involved.

When you see a queue of high profile players breaking their necks to sign on the dotted line up there you know somethings cooking.

Who thought it was a shock that Idris went there instead of re signing with the Dogs or going to Newcastle?

Who thought it was a shock that Douglas would leave us after so many years with the Club?

Who thinks it's strange that Boyd is sold on the idea of going up there after following Bennett around like a sick puppy since year dot?

Look, its an idiot fest.
Titans are way under the cap & front loaded many last year. they will also be offloading heavily at years end.
On top of that, the imbecile that involved prince in the house that was never built is a pathological liar who used the Titans much in the same way a cheap whore looking for 15 minutes of fame does.
Owing Millions to sub contractors his rants about the titans certainly deflected attention away from his failed 8 projects.

2 seasons ago the titans had the money for Cameron Smith. Around 450k. He knocked them back & they resigned friend for $200k. They probably would have gone to 300 for friend. Since then Ratt has retired, Presto semi-retired, conn left, & a host of 2nd tier players.
Way under the cap.

You are very naive if you think there's nothing going on up there.

There is absolutely nothing going on up there that isn't going on at other clubs. Everyting that you think has happened & has been investigated, including Rats Mrs job. The Titans are run by an accounting firm. Everything is in triplicate & signed off on with Stat decs, including all player contracts. Unlike , other clubs, which we won't mention.

So why did they go to the NRL last year for a hand out?

As a famous robot would say 'Does not compute.'
Well, they have been much more than once. Also, it is nto a handout, it is an advance & 50% of NRL clubs use that facility. But none more so than the Tits. Like many of us they have been triple whammied by things over the last couple of years in terms of the changing economic climate.
Payments aren't as bad as everybody has been making out in terms of non third party deals. Have heard a few of thsoe are scratchy or behind though.
But they are well under the cap if everybody they think is leaving , does leave.
