Definitely not me! Call me harsh, kill joy or mean spirited (no pun intended), but when I heard that John Key wants to have a parade for a team that didn't advance past the first round and ffs didn't even win a game!

Is that what we're becoming now with pc bullsh*t. We support mediocrity and participation? John Key gave them sh*tloads to attend the games that some national sports will never see in a whole year.

Did the U20 fugby team get a parade for winning their world champs? What about all the times softball won theirs? And before I get flamed 'cos soccer is a worldwide participated huge numbers blah blah blah sport, a WORLD title is a WORLD title! Let's have some consistency ffs:x

pc bullsh*t.

What does having a parade have to do with political correctness? It's not a throwaway term at your disposal to label something you're not happy with, it does actually have a meaning. Pretty much, the team did much better than expected at one of the biggest events in world sport: an event NZ haven't qualified for in 28 years. People are happy about that and so they should be. Who cares if they have a parade to celebrate that fact.

BTW, this is coming from someone who hates soccer and supports Italy come word cup time. Harden up champ.

It's the opposite of "PC bullsh*t".

It's rewarding a REAL achievement on a genuine international stage.

"PC bullsh*t" would be throwing a parade for a nothing achievement like winning in children's coma ball or the international female variant of baseball.

Epic fail thread. What a goose post.

That should have been a constant repetition of David being slain by Goliath. Didn't happen. Don't forget four years ago New Zealand didn't have any participation in a professional league as the Knights folded, didn't look like we would have any either. To then get the Phoenix set up, and then from there get us back to the World Cup, the premier sporting event around the world for the first time in 28 years, gain our first point, not get beaten, not being overawed by the World Champions, ... awesome effort. Courage under fire you could say, because I don't think too many of us saw that sort of result.

Giving your all, against all odds... and coming up trumps on the world stage, that sounds like something NZ should be proud of. It's the stuff our great nation is built upon.

Right there. Mean = dumbest post I think I've ever read, principally because you appear to actually believe the sh*t you wrote. Yep even dumber than something Skinny or Byrnerovelli would come up with.

If you're going to bandy about the "PC" term learn how to use it your boring tosser.

Yep, I certainly got flamed. However, the reference to PC had nothing directly to do with the parade. Yep, I know what PC means and the relevance it has to mediocrity and participation. Why a parade? Let's just give them all a certificate like we give to all our kids who participate these days. Being PC these days, is about not causing any type of social indifference. So that's why we don't reward our winners in schools.

"Giving your all" should be an expectation in all sports.
"Against all odds" basically you've told yourself that you got a sh*t show of doing any good and whatever the result is "it's okay"

How are we ever going to win the Soccer World Cup when our expectations are not?
Where's the winning attitude and confidence to do it? Our neighbours across the ditch certainly have it, the Maroons have it.

If you want winners you have to be one and not some politically INcorrect tosser as described.

Lol, you got roasted Mean! ;-) The 'feel good' factor is high and anyone who dares to dis that is gonna be skewered!
But I know what you mean in many ways. Lets be honest here: The Soccer WC is the biggest event on the planet, and comparing most of the sports we give a **** about is like measuring a Whale against a guppy. And the guys did fantastic, they really did- punching WAY above their weight, and even drawing against a powerhouse like Italy!!!! That is nuts and a credit to them. They deserve accolades, a Halberg nomination, a great crowd at the airport to cheer them on return.
BUT, the media is a fickle thing, and bandwagoners of the worst kind. While they can't get enough of something like the All Whites-as well as they've done- Our softball champs, our Kiwis World Cup winning team, our young Rugby champions, aren't glamourous enough and hardly get a look in.
Of course these sports aren't in the same ballpark (scuse the pun) as the mighty soccer game, but they are still important to us in this country-And have excelled and triumphed in their chosen sports. And deserve more coverage for sure.
But Politicians and media are all about the Glamour, the bandwagon, the snobbism.
And that's not taking anything away from the All Whites, who did fantastically well.

Christ, you sound like you should be either troubleshooting for an IT help-desk or writing to the editor of the Reefton Daily Telegraph complaining about those bloody hoodlums with their skatedecks and hipityhop music.
