Our attack, and why it sucks

It has nothing to do with the backs and halves, knights have the best halves and backs in the competition I think.

From 1-7 there is no weakness.

The major weakness for the knights is the backrow and the bench depth.
Guys like MacKinnon and Rochow are not guys that are going to brake games open, they are just stock standard nrl players, the only classy 2nd rower you have is jermey smith and he is getting a bit old now.

So Knights really have to invest on the backrow next couple years and bring a couple of attacking based 2nd rowers that can split the game open.

Once they do that I think they will be a real premiership threat.

Mullen and Roberts are better than Foran and Cherry-Evans? Dude, just become a Knights supporter already, your red and blue glasses work way better than most of ours.

The argument that we're in so many close games because 'this is the realm of good teams' would apply if we were only having close games with other good teams.

We're having close games against sides we should be beating comfortably. We are unable to compete in a game of football beyond sixty minutes, and it's been a long while since we've put on a healthy amount of points and then defended that lead.

If this is Bennetball, I'm not a fan. I'm sick of us competing for about 2/3rds of the game and then disappearing and losing in limp-wristed fashion.

I'd take Mullen over either of them. I wouldn't take Roberts over either of them. Decent half - but nothing special.

I agree that potency in the backrow is one of our major concerns (it's the biggest concern in my opinion). Rochow has probably been our best hole running forward all season, but we need more. Smith plays hard and tough in the middle of the field, which is fine. But we desperately need a skillful second rower on the right side of the field to create space for Gagai and Uate.

I'd swap any player in our squad to have Cherry-Evans. Mullen has improved out of sight, but he still struggles to consistently make the right play at the right time in attacking positions and his running game these days is virtually non-existent unless he looks up and just happens to see a yawning gap in front of him.

I wouldn't mind making a play for Jordan McLean from the Storm. That guy is a beast and will only get better in time. He's a prop but did you see the damage he did against us up the middle? Cronk was feeding late short balls to him all day and he proved a handful every time. He palmed off Chris Houston like he wasn't there. When does he come off contract? The kid is an absolute prospect.

Normally I'd advise against recruiting Storm players, but not this bloke.

We needed to go hard for Cordner but that ship has sailed unfortunately.

Id love for us to shift Big Willie out wide and unleash him on some opposition halves but our prop stocks are too shallow and we cant afford to sacrifice the go forward he gives us at prop

I'd take Foran over DCE. Foran is such a competitor and is a winner.

I agree that we need a strike backrower. Rochow is great but too one dimensional...

Personally, I think our attack from our tryline to the opposition 10m is very good for the cattle we have. Our centres followed by our wingers are our biggest weapons and we are one of the few teams in the competition which give our centres early ball. Against Melbourne, Gagai was 12 runs for 129m with 17 receives and BJ was 15 runs for 127m with 20 receives. For the Storm, O'Neill 10 runs for 77 metres with 12 receives and Chambers 7 runs for 54m with 10 receives.

Our centres ran for a combined 256m from 27 runs. Our entire backrow (lock and both second rowers) ran for 237m from 27 runs, and that's with Robbie Rochow making 116 of those metres. They also only broke 1 tackle between the three of them, compared with 8 for BJ+Gagai.

Which leads me into my next point - our attack inside the 10m zone. Giving early ball to our centres pays dividends when we are on our way to the tryline but it just doesn't work inside the ten, since there's no chance to give the ball to the centre with much space or momentum. So, instead we rely on a) Mullen kicking to the corner b) Boyd running his play on the left or c) Get the ball to Aku or Jimmy and hope they do it all themselves.

Boyd's play on the left isn't working well for two reasons. Firstly, that is because of our second row. What we are lacking is, like JW mentioned, a guy like Boyd Cordner. Rochow, McKinnon and Scott are all good players but of all their traits, busting the line, running holes and scoring tries are hardly their greatest attributes. For that block play to work, it is imperative that the forward is a massive threat to the defence close to the line.

Ben Creagh is much maligned but in 09/10 he knew his way to the try line with 8 tries and 10 tries for each season.

That can be covered up by the man with the ball being a threat, which imo, Darius isn't. He rarely takes on the line in that play. Even at Saints, one season he had 20+ try assists but only 1 try or something crazy like that. Luckily that left edge was stacked, so he never really needed to take the line on.

It's about time Aku comes back into the attack. On the left shift, I'd love to see Uate come off his wing and run on the inside of Boyd. There, the defence can't slide too early because if they do, Uate will be there to slide over the line.

So yeah, I wrote more than I expected lol, but in summary:

Our attack is good for the cattle we have up to the 10 metre line, which we need to try some new plays on. What our team is lacking is a strike second rower ala Boyd Cordner. Aku needs to be more involved.

The more you look at our attack i am in total agreement that hard running ball playing forwards is exactly what we need. Halfbacks are not the attacking epicentre of a Bennett side. It is something that gets more apparent every week. We just need to push harder from the get go.

I don't know if we do need ball playing back rowers- we just need to use the ones that we have better. Rochow showed on the weekend what is possible with a clever play close to the line- pass it out left to our centre/winger or back on the inside to Boyd/whoever. 9 times out of 10 the only option available to Rochow would have been to take the tackle or pass it on, but Boyd being there created a try for us.

Same goes for our second phase play- we have the guys who are capable of providing it, but Bennett has wiped it out of our game plan. We are all about completing sets and compiling pressure. It's almost as if Bennett plans for us to only score points by running through the motions and hoping for a defender to choose the wrong option and make a mistake. If they don't make a mistake then hopefully they do next set, or the set after...

Look at how many times we are 30-40m out from the tryline and Mullen kicks defensively to the corner or more often than not, into touch. It seems that it is more important to get into the position to have a good set defensively rather than putting the ball up high, having a good chase and trying to force an error from the opposition. We may be 10-15m worse off on some occasions, but we are going to create a hell of a lot more opportunities by doing so.
