Does it mean anything to have beefy forwards.Sure didn't help parra last night ;-) and also the lightest group got up against the sharks?????

The roosters aren't big but they can hurt in defence?

I guess time will tell .We will find out more as the the comp goes longer .A little too early yet.

Having Matt Parsons pushes our pack weight up - if you took him out and put in a 100kg prop instead we drop down to nuumber 8 and only a few kgs above number 12.
I think there is room for big guys who barge through, but smaller guys who are more mobile are great as well - and a guy like Ben Kennedy who is big and mobile is pure gold.

Guys like Shane Webke make the ultimate forward. Big, strong, heavy and fast.

An unlikely combination of characteristics, but he's one player who as them all.

His attitude on the field is outstanding too. An extremely hard worker.

If Josh Perry wises up a bit and stops giving away stupid penalties, and puts in that little bit extra every week, he'd be in the same class as Webcke.

They have similar builds and styles, so I'm fairly excited about his future prospects.

Perry was very good in defence on Friday night, as was the rest of the team. Myabe Hagan pipped him about his penalty count and he was tip toeing around the firled in caution :D

he made the first mistake of the night - quite fitting really.

i've given up getting excited about every year being Josh Perry's year. he lacks discipline and does make stupid mistakes and gives away stupid penalties and i really dont see any reason why it will stop this year - unless he plays like he did Friday night and have next to no activity in the game.

all he needs to do is think about what he is doing and get some discipline and he will do well for us - i cant see it happening though.

i used ot be totally pissed at pery, after his huge raps but never really coming through, but he finished last year very strongly, and when you see him play well it does get you excited. Hes a god player, and the best prop we have ( although wooly could overtake in a season or two) he should do well this year, after origin adn the end of last season. Props always take longer too mature anyway, most props dont reach tehir peak til like 25

Weight-totals make for good reading, but detailed analysis of a game needs to include mistake-rates, missed-tackles, hit-ups etc.

It is no good having a 130kg forward if he is too slow to make a tackle, or too uncoorindated to catch the ball and run for at least 5-7 metres per hit-up.

While our forward pack size is a bonus, our best forwards are actually around the 100-105kg range. Kennedy is our best forward, but he earns the tag thanks to his dependability in both attack and defence.

You want forwards that play at 100% for the whole match, that can be counted on to not let the opposing forwards through the line, and that can draw defenders in attack - Kennedy, and indeed others, do this.

The Knights have a good pack, no question. I'm just not convinced it is the combined weight that gives our pack its quality.

Not sure if anyone's interested but here's an article I just came across. Looks like the Dragons will concede a fair amount of weight this weekend

Slim Saints face heavy task

By Josh Massoud
If it were boxing, authorities wouldn’t let the bout go ahead. Even in a sport renowned for its brutal courage, 21 kilos is simply too big an advantage to concede.
The weight difference between the St George Illawarra Dragons' and New Zealand Warriors' packs that will collide this Saturday night at Ericsson Stadium is considerable, but there won’t be any respite for the Dragons.

With the loss of Kangaroo prop Luke Bailey to suspension today, on top of fellow Test bookend Jason Ryles continued omission due to a shoulder injury, the Saints’ pack has suddenly shrunk overnight.

And with arguably the NRL’s most fearsome front row combination in their path this weekend, it appears fate couldn’t have picked a worse time to enforce a diet up front.

Named to negate Warriors monsters Iafeta Palea’aesina (110kg) and Karl Temata (104kg) are Nathan Long and Lance Thomson, normally a second rower or lock who makes a rare appearance at prop this weekend. Long and Thompson each tip the scales at a ‘puny’ 103kgs, and when both back rows are taken into account, the Saints’ pack (minus hookers) will go in 4.2 kg lighter per man.

Their task might have been even more difficult had heavyweights Richard Villasanti, Jerry Seuseu and regular captain Monty Betham been available for the home side.

Unless the Dragons’ forwards display a greater willingness to offload and establish quick play the balls than they did last week against Canberra, Auckland might suddenly become a very cramped place for the team’s pacy backline.

Although underweight, St George Illawarra will take heart from their last foray across the ditch in 2002, when a side minus representative stars Trent Barrett, Shaun Timmins, Mark Gasnier, Bailey and Ryles prevailed 32-22.

After beginning 2004 on a losing note, both teams will be desperate to avoid a 0-2 start. Deputising as Warriors captain for the suspended Betham, who is in any case expected to miss the next 11 weeks with a broken arm, is lock Awen Guttenbeil, who has led the side previously.

Exciting local Tevita Latu has recovered from injury and illness just in time to replace Betham at hooker, with Warriors coach Daniel Anderson declaring, "Both his natural fitness and attitude towards training has reassured us that he is ready to play NRL this weekend."

TEAMS

Dragons: 1. Ben Hornby, 2. Nathan Blacklock, 3. Mark Gasnier, 4. Matt Cooper, 5. Reece Simmonds, 6. Trent Barrett (C), 7. Brett Firman, 8. Lance Thompson, 9. Mark Riddell, 10. Nathan Long, 11. Dean Young, 12. Henry Perenara, 13. Shaun Timmins.
Bench: 14. Ashton Sims, 15. Brent Kite, 16. Justin Poore, 17. Lincoln Withers, 18. Michael Howell, 19. Ryan Powell.

Warriors: 1. Brent Webb, 2. Henry Fa’afili, 3. Vinnie Anderson, 4. Clinton Toopi, 5. Francis Meli, 6. Thomas Leuluai, 7. Stacey Jones, 8. Karl Temata, 9. Tevita Latu, 10. Iafeta Palea'aesina, 11. Sione Faumuina, 12. Ali Lauitiiti, 13. Awen Guttenbeil (C).
Bench: 14. Epalahame Lauaki, 15. Mark Tookey, 16. Wairangi Koopu, 17. Tony Martin, 18. Justin Murphy, 20. Paul Dezolt, 23. Evarn Tuimavave.

Gotta be honest I think a fit Woolnough is every bit as good if not better than Perry. If Wooly hadn't been plagued with that back/neck thing last year he would've been pushing Perry/Parsons as our best prop.

Well, according to the stats at the top of the page, the Tigers conceded 53kg's to the Sharks, yet we held our own quite comfortably...

Stats can be twisted to suit any argument... whilst being big is good, it's not the only thing. If the dragons can play smart, than 21kg's should not pose too many problems. However, in saying that, I tip the Warriors to win, but I would have tipped them had the Dragons been at full strength.

I think Parra might have learnt that the hard way last week.

Yesterday on NRL on Fox they were talking to Darren Senter about John Skandalis. They discussed the fact that in the past Skandalis has basically run a straight line and basically got smashed by any larger opposition. Whereas now (according to Senter) he now puts some thought into the lines that he runs and also has a bit of a passing game.

But having said that, all other things being equal (e.g. skill level and speed) weight must make some difference

The pack size didn't help the Warriors on Sunday.
