I dont see a lot of progression in Iro's coaching career under Cleary, he's a glorified trainer.

I agree with this, but will go a step further...The 20's under Iro were great. The talent was better(IMO when Iro was their coach), but never consistantly played to their potential. It appeared to me that Iro relied on the players brute force and ridiculous skill and that was it...it appeared very unstrucured.

Ackland IMO has taken lesser players (not lesser players now though)in the last couple NYC seasonsand made them better players, and players that can play to a game plan.

A question though...why would you want to move Ackland up if he is recognised as a talent scout second to none in NZ, and has a brilliant development strategy in NYC?

Just out of interest, and I'm not having a go here at all, how do we know Iro hasn't progressed under Cleary? How do we really know what he's doing at all?

Wouldn't Iro be the forwards coach (if there is such a thing) and they've been the shining light this season?

Cheers for that Oz. I would ask the same things as PW above - but in all honesty, I would be happy with any of the possible configurations between them.

It's like any other job, it's not a good idea to pass someone over for promotion just because they're good in the position that they currently hold and you don't want to change things, because chances are sooner or later they'll get poached by another organisation. If Ackland is content coaching juniors then fine, but if he has aspirations to coach at a higher level then they have to be taken into account if we want to retain him. Of course the same can be said for Iro.

Is Norton past it? I mean, I know he still has a lot to offer, but the problem I see for him (and to an extent Ackland) is that coaching is like any art - it evolves. If they bring in training and tactics from yester-year, we are going to get beat. Just a thought - and perhaps a nod of the cap to Iro.

McCLENNAN FIRMING
Former Kiwis coach Brian McClennan remains a firm favourite for the vacant Warriors job, with an announcement expected next week. Warriors officials have confirmed to Sin Bin that they are considering candidates from Super League, believed to be Hull KR's Justin Morgan, and Australia, as well as McClennan, under-20s coach John Ackland and Ivan Cleary's assistant, Tony Iro. Ackland and Iro are tipped to remain at the club, even if McClennan gets the top job. McClennan would be a popular choice. He also won two premierships in his three seasons with Super League club Leeds.

I just think people are going on about McClennan, like he is a deadset lock for the coaching job and the next messiah.

Let's not forget that there have been plenty of other coaches, who have had success in the UK, then have struggled with the NRL. I know he has had success with the Kiwis as well. Mal Meninga has had success in the SOO, but he wasn't the greatest NRL coach, was he?

I just hope the Warriors have cast the net a bit further than the backyard. I'm not really sold on Morgan either.

Hope Iro Or Ackland have a good chance.

Be good for Mclennan to get the spot, his record speaks for itself.

Leave Sticky to the Aussie teams. And Anderson has had his day. Someone told me Blackmore was in the running....oh please god no.

Completely agree. I've got no idea how they decide who is the best coach for the job, I'm just hoping they've looked at all the options instead of just looking at the ones who are right up in their faces.
