Exactly. No future planning cost us, Doust and Young are the two men he should venting about not the man that came in did a job that no other in 30 odd years could do but hey lets blame Bennett for winning a comp.

If Bennetts job were to win the premiership, he did his job. If it were to set the team up for long-term success, he not only failed but was actively plotting against it. Even if his job were to simply win the premiership, it still seemed to me he actively plotted against long-term success.

He signed Fien, Hornby and Cooper to long-term contracts shortly before he left while at Brisbane he always prided himself on the philosophy that it's better to let players go a year too early than a year too late.

I think he signed those guys up to longer contracts so that he could fit everyone in on a less rate then other clubs but as they call them the back ended contracts cost every team that wants to keep the good players together to try and win the comp. Oh sorry roosters and dogs do not count.

All these guys, many admittedly club legends, who many of us were complaining about sticking around too long actually retired while still under contract. Bennett either thought they were up to first grade for still one more year or he was plotting against the team. Which do you think it was?

If he were indeed plotting against the long-term success of the team, it wouldn't be a surprise. He knew he was going to be a rival coach so why wouldn't he want to weaken his rivals? What is surprising is the number of Dragons fans still fawning over him rather than denouncing him as an irreconcilable enemy:x!

You've heard the saying "It's better to have loved than never loved at all"

I love that we won a comp in 2010 and a large part of that was Wayne Bennett!

See, I dont have any issues to the timing of these guys retirement, bar MAYBE Hornby. Cooper was injured for a lot of his final season, not Bennetts fault at all. When he played, he showed he still had it in spades. Fien would have been an absolutely fantastic hooker for us to have in 2013, the issue was the Price played him at halfback. Even Hornbag would have been fine in his final year if we had a decent coach that could use his tactical nous while accounting for his lack of speed.

Ultimately, our issues post-Bennett were recruitment and coaching. It was the club whi signed Price, then re-signed him when it was blatantly obvious how bad he was. It was the club who didnt put succession plans in place for our retiring/leaving stars (even Boyd). It was the club (through C.Young) that signed guys like Hunt, Farrell and Rein to high dollar, long term contracts. It was the club that f**ked up our junior development paths and pushed us into having to do all our recruitment externally.

It looks like systems are in place to fix these issues now, but it was laziness and poor management internally that saw our fall from grace, not a plot by Bennett.

The issue with Bennett was the young players he let go and which we didn't replace. That set us back years.

For example, you can't say goodbye to Josh Morris, Dean Whare, Bj Leuilia, Kane Linnett all in the space of a couple of years - and not bring in one decent young centre from elsewhere.

We're still trying to play catch up on that.

Thoughts on Konrad Hurrell - should the Dragons try & sign him ?

Yes. We need strike power and he has it in spades but he will never reach his potential in the culture. From a career perspective he needs to move clubs.

If he didn't plot against the long-term success of the team while still winning the comp I wouldn't have any particular problem with him. He would be an enemy who at one time made a significant contribution to society, even if it were only because of the money he was getting.

As it were he signed all those players to long term deals shortly before leaving even when 2011 showed they really only had 1 season left at best. True there was no one to readily replace them because Bennett sent all the good young players on their way.

The players you mentioned all got jobs with the club after they retired on probably good money so that the salary cap would not hurt the dragons, it was a lack of planning by our club.

If he's available we should go at him with big bucks. He's an absolute weapon.
A change of clubs is what this sort of guy needs.

I'm pretty sure Kurt Mann is a dud but FFS, if Hurrell is available, get that homie and do whatever it takes to make it happen. Would much prefer him to Hoppate.

He has a year left on his contract but the Warriors are looking to offload him - he might stay in the NRL, go to ESL or even rugby union....

He's another one of those players with plenty of potential but needs to find the right coach & players to see him utilise his talent.
