This NZ side should be nearly favorites for the world cup if Hughes plays
And potentially Ponga and Brandon Smith.

I've seen a few leaguie podcasters making NZ thier early pick to win next year.

Nz need to be full strength at 6 and 7, they literally have no back up...unless Foz and SJ want to come out of retirement again.

So is the next pacific cup in 2027 and which 3 nations will be taking part?
2027 is slated for NZ tour England and PC to be played between Aus, Tonga and Samoa.

I'm not sure we would be wise going up against the Union WC which will be played in Australia at the same time.

Could be a good chance to give the players a full off-season.

Definitely when you factor in all the potential defections from Australia to samoa&tonga.
There's only a couple in the Roos to defect isn't there?

Yep, this is always the way, we can roll out a couple of good ones but we always lack depth. Maybe Maori boy Luai will defect to us for the RLWC if we give Samoa a good hiding this weekend. 🤣

I think the issue with that is that it wasn't really a RL crowd, it was a Tongan specific RL crowd. NZers need to get off their ass and start going to matches.
I think big crowds with a hyped up atmosphere and NZ still winning will eventually bring more Kiwis fans in. If they stick with this comp and let it reach its full potential.

Fwiw I think the current 2027 plans would be a mistake. The Pacific Cup needs to be a 4 nations with Aus NZ Samoa Tonga. Tour in alternate years.

Anyway crowd was lots of fun and it was great to see the Kiwis running riot. Never seen a crowd so happy even getting flogged. Still partying in the streets after. The whole crowd getting into the Tongan war dance was awesome

Well, I want to see the Kiwis win in England so can't agree with you on 2027.

Well they only one half were getting flogged, there other half was winning. 🤣

The Int agreement has NZ touring England in 2027. Not that it means much!

Yes

NZ going to England

Australia, Samoa & Tonga
I really hope the RFL don’t revert back to playing all 3 tests against the kiwis at the much smaller RL venues like headingley(Leeds), DW stadium(Wigan) and MKM stadium(hull) etc.

id go with 1st test spurs/arsenal, 2nd test Everton and 3rd test bramall lane(Sheffield).

as for the pacific cup id go Samoa v Tonga at suncorp, Australia v Tonga at commbank and Australia v Samoa at AAMI park with the final at Allianz.

You have to be realistic. The crowds for NZ series games tend to max out at 15-20k. Chances of getting 40k+ to Everton for a game v the Kiwis is slim to none. If we targeted stadiums around the 30k capacity that is a good and realistic goal to aim for. They'd need to find an angle to hype it though like we have been able to do with the Ashes.

Bramall Lane 32k or Hillsborough 34k Sheffield
Ewood Park 31.6k Blackburn
Elland Road 37.6k

or more conservative

MKM stadium Hull 25.5k
Bolton 28k
Wigan 25.1k

2027 - if its a touring year, lets not do the Pacific Cup. Hold it with the full 4 nations in 2028.

Alternate 2027 idea -
1: NZ tours England
2: Australia hosts Pacific "tour" - plays NZ, Fiji, PNG, Tonga, Samoa. Probably mostly hosted in Aus as I doubt the commercials would add up otherwise but would be cool to do an actual Pacific tour.
3: Samoa v Tonga 3 match series
4: PNG v Fiji 3 match series
5: Cook Islands v Lebanon 3 match series

week 1: (warm ups) NZ v Samoa, Tonga v PNG, Fiji v Cook Islands, Lebanon v someone
week 2: NZ v Australia - Samoa v Tonga (1) - PNG v Fiji (1) - Lebanon v Cook Islands (1)
week 3: (NZ travel) - Australia v Fiji - Samoa v Tonga (2) - Lebanon v Cook Islands (2)
week 4: England v NZ - Australia v Tonga - PNG v Fiji (2) - Lebanon v Cook Islands (3)
week 5: England v NZ - Australia v PNG - Samoa v Tonga (3)
week 6: England v NZ - Australia v Samoa - PNG v Fiji (3)

Well they only one half were getting flogged, there other half was winning. 🤣

Funniest thing was part of the Tongan crowd booing the Kiwis as they run out, then the same people passionately singing both Tongan and NZ anthems.

As a side note, I think the dominance of the Tongan crowd is a little overstated. There were a lot of black shirts in between the reds but the red stands out against the black and the sheer amount of flags obscures everything. I'd guess 70% Tongan, not 90+ as some people have claimed

Yeah, was discussing this in one of the NZ threads. Hughes and Brown are world class but after that you are down to Nikorima at 7 and probably CNK or TMM at 6.

Isaia Katoa and Jett Cleary are NZ born but I can't see them switching.

1. Ponga, 6. Brown, 7. Hughes, 9. JMK, 14. Cheese is a quality spine though, on the back of a forward pack containing JFH, Leota, Tapine, Xavier Willison, Papalii... Wow!

Agree, you could see that with the crowd close-up shots.

Disagree, if we want this thing to have value and build, can`t be having off years. And just hand the whole sporting landscape over to the union, what sort of message would that send. They`d love it, their journalists would have a field day.

I think it should be done properly every second (non-RLWC) year, not done half-arsed every year. No one will ever convince me that a single-round 3 nation format is anything more than half-arsed.

As for handing over the entire sporting landscape, did you bother to read past that sentence?

Out of the current Australian side there is only 2 in Tino and Katoni. I dont think those 2 guys not playing for Australia weakens them to the point where they still wouldnt be favourites, especially if guys like Latrell, Tommy T and Cam Murray are fit.

It is good to see the Intl teams much closer than ever before now though. Great for the sport

Kini at 1.
Ponga at 14.
Back up 9 is Crossland.
Back up 14 is TMM.
Back up 1 is CNK, though he will likely move to the centres in clubland anyway, so can see him switching to the Kukis.
