Panthers hungrier in battle to avoid the spoon
21st July 5.14pm, Written by David Rohl
Wests Panthers fans are celebrating this afternoon after a huge second half effort which resulted in the clubs fourth win of Season 2001. The 42 - 34 win will go a long way to ensuring the Panthers avoid the wooden spoon and almost certainly dooms Souths to this fate. Wests move to 11 competition points with a bye still in hand whilst the Magpies remain on 8 points from 2 wins and 2 byes.
Souths started the match confidently scoring in the first minute after Wests were penalised for being off-side from the kickoff. The Ben Davidson try sounded an ominous warning for Panthers supporters. Wests squandered several opportunities to hit back before Tristan Brady-Smith crossed for the Magpies 2nd try. In the 19th minute when rising star Trent Young darted through the defende to score it was 16 - nil in Souths favour. Both sides lost a player to the sin bin later in the half, opening up the game. Wests held onto two chances and at one stage trailed only 20 - 12, but Souths were doing it easy, and skipped away to a seemingly insurmountable 30 - 12 half time lead. For Wests it was a half of missed opportunities. Although unable to match it in the forwards Wests were making big inroads out wide but failed to finish off, with several chances going to ground and twice being held up in goal. Souths looked cool and in control of this match at the break.
By contrast the second half was all Wests. Despite losing the Queensland Cup's top tryscorer Brent Webb to the sin bin for fighting, Wests were first to score. The can bar crowd fired up the Panthers from then on demanding 'Give us the best, Wests'. James Brown led a Red and Black revival with two tries and two goals to see the Panthers trail by only two points in the 61st minute. Souths rallied and Brady-Smith scored his 2nd try to put the Magpies back in front by 6. However there was no stopping the comeback with a converted try to even the scores coming in the 72nd minute, then two more to seal a great victory for the Panthers. Souths again have found a way to lose by 2 tries or less. Although the more solid of the two teams, the Magpies cannot seem to put a side away. Wests 42 (Webb, Brown 2, Morgan, Lambert, Tanielu, Proctor tries; Brown 3, Lambert 2 goals) def Souths 34 (Davidson, Brady-Smith 2, Young, Bruce, Alo tries; Lockyer 3 goals) In the Quest Classifieds Cup Souths won A Grade 38 - 4, while Wests won the Colts 52 - 6.
