elusive winger

I had news he wasn't happy up north and was coming back to Manly.

Announced today he's signed with the panthers.

He'll be a good signing for your mob. Tough young nut.

cheers

Travis Burns has signed with Penrith on a two year deal (I Think)
In the Daily telegraph, as well as from the Members email.

Good signing but I hope Graham is still given the first shot.

I beat the Manly man but I guess this one can be locked.

:) Yep, very happy to hear this news. Any depth we can get in the halves is great news, as that was one area we were looking very thin in for next season.

He primarily plays Five-Eighth... however is he capable at filling in at Hooker or Halfback? Don't think he has played halfback in first-grade, however I'm pretty sure he's played hooker, including against us this season.

This is probably the best signing we've made for 2010. I was hoping we would sign Travis Burns a couple of years ago when he was leaving Manly. He has pretty much fallen off the radar since then, but he's a pretty talented 5/8 with a bit of mongrel in him and can defend well. If he comes into our halves at the expense of Luke Walsh we're certainly going to be better for it.

If our halves are to remain the same, I would also be happy with Burns becoming the bench utility. At any rate it's about time we had a signing that adds depth in a weak area and improves our full strength team.

Sorry, I'm unconvinced the signing of Burns will prove to be any better than that of our other signings for next season.

I agree Caged. He's not exactly an attacking dynamo. Struggled to hold a first grade spot with the Cows.
I'll bet Graham isn't too happy with the news.

I'm not sure if he will actually play better than the others, it's hard to say... however I think he's probably our best signing for the simple fact that he provides depth in the positions we were looking the thinnest in for next year (halves). :)

I agree he isn't a superstar, however IMO we didn't need a superstar but just someone to provide us with a bit of depth and he will do that.

I think you're a bit harsh saying he struggled to hold a first grade spot. He played 20 games for the Cowboys this year, mostly at five-eighth and a few off the bench.

Also, after looking at the Cowboys forum it seems quite a few of them would prefer Burns at five eighth over Rovelli, even though Rovelli has been the one playing there recently.

As long as you don't expect too much from Burns to provide in attack, you mob will be quite happy with this signing. He is more than capable of finishing off a set play and putting a man through a gap, has a pretty decent kicking game close to the line too. His toughness is his biggest asset though, great defender and puts his all in. He woulda been my preferred choice 5/8 at the Cowboys this coming year, sad to lose him but i hope he goes good for Penrith.

I'm happy about this signing for 2 reasons:

1. It provides us with some depth in the halves area.
2. Because of this depth, it creates competition for positions and will make all the halves work that little bit harder for their chance to shine.

Great work by all involved in securing Trav's signature in my opinion!

He is a lock, he isn't a half's a$$hole. He is tenacious, and will give it all, but don't be expecting him to carve it up deluxe with the ball.

gowie reincarnated?

I have been praying for a big name signing which would encourage Fibroman to pay for his season tickets for 2010 prior to Xmas.

This is it Fibroman, Mrs Kilkenny has coughed up the cash, the signing of Travis Burns surely has you salivating and the $500-00 must surely be coming Kilkenny's way this week? (I need it after a shocker at the Winmalee Tav only the other night)

As Dee said it's mostly his toughness that is the stand out.
I quite liked him playing for us but he'll do well in Penrith.

Good signing IMO. Will be interesting to see who misses out in the starting 17.

Bench
14. W.Graham?

Do we also have M.Isofa or Romelo on the bench?

Not really sure what he'll be able to offer you guys. His defence is excellent, like playing with an extra forward. And, yes, he can finish off 5th tackle plays with a cutout pass or a grubber behind the line.

In terms of creativity though, he's a bit lacking. Very one-dimensional as a hooker, and isn't the greatest playmaker at five-eighth.

Most of us Cows fans liked him this season because he gave his all, every single match. If he could take more playmaking pressure off JT and contribute with a decent long-kicking game, he would have been the perfect partner for JT in the halves.

Hope he works out well for you guys, although in all honesty I think he would suit a club like Newcastle better. Hopefully he develops his playmaking skills a bit more at Penrith - not the most naturally gifted footballer around, but he's a solid firstgrader. Maybe he would be better suited at lock.

burns is a great signing simply put this year we had not one other option bar wade and walsh. That by itself signing him gives us options and forces players around him to rise to keep positions
