Parish intends to pick Milford for Samoa Test

Samoan coach Parish plans to name the game’s hottest player in his 17 when the island nation takes on Tonga on May 7.

That would require Milford to switch his allegiance back to Samoa, which he can do given two years have expired since his first commitment to the Maroons and Kangaroos.

Parish believes he can do so without ruling himself out of contention for both the 2017 Origin series and Kangaroos World Cup campaign, though the eligibility rules on the RLIF website say that is exactly what will happen if he plays for Samoa.

If that’s the case, and an NRL spokesman confirmed clarity is being sought on the situation from the game’s international body, then unfortunately it’s very unlikely to happen.

....

Which leaves Parish, who also has to deal with NRL clubs - some are helpful, some are anything but - before finalising his side.

“I’ll name the strongest 17 I can, which of course includes Anthony,” Parish says.

“Then that’ll go to the clubs. We’ll see who’s left after that, because there are unfortunately some that don’t support this and players will be ruled out one way or another.

“If we can get Anthony and the top line guys playing for us, I promise you we’ll get 15,000 for this game.

What the hell has this got to do with individual clubs? The RLIF rules state all clubs have to release players for internationals.

Also, if Milford was picked for Queensland and Samoa would the Australian public really care that much? If they did, Australia would be playing 8 internationals a year to full houses. Milford is a clear example of someone who sees himself as a legit Queenslander and a legit Samoan.

It is a scandal this guy has not played a single rep game since 2013 because of all the insular politics.

It doesn't take much for a club to rule out a player due to a strained muscle. I've got a strained neck just from typing this reply. All within the rules. Thankfully most clubs are good. Some coaches are awful at releasing players - ricky stuart in particular.

I f*cking hate this 2 year rule. Have them decide their loyalties and stick with it...

Players should be able to pick NSW/QLD and a Pacific Nation if they want (i know its a hard concept but SOME people have 2 parents and something these parents arent from the same place), but once they make a commitment that should be the end of it......

My wife had to put up with my ranting this morning after I read a par quoting Milfords manager Sam Ayoub bemoaning the fact that Milford wants to play for Qld, Australia & Samoa... And the nasty rules won't let him.

FFS just how entitled is this generation?

Exactly. That is the problem with people like joey calling for this ridiculous rule change, he wants the players to have their cake and eat it too. They basically want Australia, NZ and England to have the pick of the players and allow all the rest to "go back" and play for the other nations. How does this help the international game in the long run?

Can anyone tell me - there must be a lawyer in these forums - what would happen if a SOO player was selected for a developing nation and played?

Legally, is it not restraint of trade to say that a player must play for Australia if he is eligible for SOO?

Im wondering if a player felt so strongly about this that he was willing to threaten legal action, would he be very quickly allowed to play like Adrian Lam and the others?

The simple fact that there are precedents here makes me wonder if they could challenge and beat these rules?

to play state of origin in the first place you must elect to play for australia before selection.

The system is convoluted but from my understanding they cannot then reverse that election until a new world cup cycle or two years is up (whichever is first).
So assuming they tried to play him the other team could call that player out as ineligible.
In the pacific test you assume theres good faith as it is more exhibition than contest.
But i would not fly in any sort of meaningful contest.

Then there's also repercussions from the RLIF who likely wouldnt be to pleased with their rules being subverted. They at the very least wouldn't sanction the test and may pull any funding they have put towards said match.

I thought the rules were you were allowed one switch per World Cup cycle without a wait.

Milford hasn't played or either Australia, QLD (First Team) and Samoa so technically he should be able to play for Samoa this year but still be picked for Australia next year.

Don't get your hopes up.

Apparently Bennett has come out tonight and said he won't allow Milford to play for Samoa.

Wayne Bennett says he won’t allow Anthony Milford to play for Samoa

TEST football has descended into high farce after Broncos coach Wayne Bennett sensationally blocked Anthony Milford from representing Samoa.

Bennett will allow Broncos prop Joe Ofahengaue to play for Tonga in the Pacific Test against Samoa next weekend, but has shut the door on clubmate Milford appearing in the same game.

The Rugby League International Federation last night took aim at Bennett, accusing the Broncos coach, who will also lead England at this year’s Four Nations, of double standards.

At least 10 Broncos players will feature in the NRL’s representative round next week, including Australian quintet Sam Thaiday, Darius Boyd, Corey Parker, Matt Gillett and Josh McGuire.

Kodi Nikorima, Jordan Kahu, Alex Glenn and Adam Blair will turn out for the Kiwis while Ofahengaue will represent Tonga ... but Bennett will not release Milford for Samoa.

In a week where ARL Commission chairman John Grant preached the importance of Test football, the absence of Milford is a massive blow for the health of the international game.

But Bennett, a long-time advocate of helping minnow nations, was standing firm, confirming Milford will not join Ofahengaue in the Pacific Test at Parramatta’s Pirtek Stadium.

“Anthony Milford is not playing for Samoa,” Bennett said.

“I don’t care what people think.

“I’ve made the call and Anthony will not be playing.”

Bennett’s decision went down like a lead balloon with Samoa coach Matt Parish, who had named Milford at five-eighth for the clash against Tonga.

Parish declined to comment but confirmed Milford was eligible for selection and claimed the Broncos ace made it clear he wanted to represent Samoa.

But the Samoan coach was left stunned when The Courier-Mail informed Parish of Bennett’s decision to block Milford’s selection.

The Queensland Rugby League believes Milford is ineligible for Samoa after turning out for the Maroons’ under-20s on May 3, 2014.

But under RLIF rules, Milford is only unavailable for Samoa for a two-year period which expires this Tuesday - clearing him for the Pacific Test four days later.

RLIF development officer Tas Baitieri hit out at Milford being stood down for a Test match his Broncos colleague Ofahengaue will play in.

“It’s double standards,” he said.

“I don’t think an NRL coach has the power to prevent Milford playing.

“If Anthony Milford feels strongly about it, he can tell Wayne Bennett he wants to play.

“The international game will take a hit out of this. Anthony Milford is the form player of the NRL and if he’s not in the Samoan team, it devalues the quality of the game.”

The NRL said last night: “Ultimately the player needs to make the decision around his eligibility pathway and the NRL is comfortable with that decision.”

Milford’s Broncos skipper Parker said international football needs help.

“We should be getting behind the international game and pumping these games up,” he said.

“We have a round of football coming up next weekend that is meant to be enhancing the international game, all I’ve heard over the last few days is people bringing it down.

“Countries like Fiji, Tonga and Samoa have come streets ahead and that’s because they are getting the best players.

“When you see what the national jerseys mean to players, it’s great.”

So why is it ok for everyone else to play Wayne but not Milford?

I can only imagine this relates to him getting in trouble in the Queensland pre-season camp and not blocking his test call.

Can we please just have some vision as a game? A 2017 World Cup with poster boys for each country - Shaun Johnson (NZ), Jonathan Thurston (Aus), Sam Burgess (Eng), Semi Radradra (Fiji), Anthony Milford (Sam), Konrad Hurrell (Ton), James Sgerayo (PNG) - would be a massive sell? Are we really that insular and stupid?

Stupid rules and politics means Milford has now gone 3 years without making a representative appearance. Whether that is sticking the guy in Queensland U20s and have him missing a 4N qualifier or imposing a state ban for missing a curfew (which seems to spread to international fixtures for some insular reason).

Samoa have no obligation to abide by qlds decision.

Parish has every right to pick him.

The issue is will the rlif enforce their rules and force him to sit out of club games.

RLIF must act. Im not even sure what they can do, but we can not have a NRL coach blocking a player from a Test Match. Milford could probably even sue.

All they care about is having Milford as an option for Queensland. Nothing more. I bet if you asked Milford he would choose Queensland and Samoa. Is it that bad to do that? Does it really hurt anything?

Look at the number of Polynesian players flooding into the NRL. This has gone beyond now there are going to be dozens of players in the same predicament. It is never going away.

He'd block them all if the thought he could get away with it.

He can't, so he'll just block the one he knows they can't win without.

Milford attended a Qld Origin camp where we was stood down for 12 months for an indiscretion. If he wants to be considered for Qld in the future, he should cop this ban on the chin and not go off and play for another country in the meantime. Otherwise what lesson is he learning from the ban? I believe this would be Wayne's line of thinking and I support it 100% if that's the case.
