The Parramatta Eels produced glimpses of quality in their Holden Cup trial loss against the Penrith Panthers despite some atrocious conditions at Centrebet Stadium.
After both teams traded tries in the opening couple of minutes the Panthers made the most of a glut of possession, controlled the ball better in the wet and kicked out to a 28-6 lead at halftime.
The Eels looked sharper in the second period and fought their way back into the contest thanks to two tries to blockbusting centre John Folau, the younger brother of former international, Israel. Penrith then closed out the match 38-14 with a couple of late four-pointers.
It's the final tune up for the NYC team before they meet the New Zealand Warriors on March 9 at Parramatta Stadium.
I hope Fraser tears this comp apart this year. He has the potential to.

THEY SAY: "We're still a young team...they were thrown to the wolves a bit last year but I think everyone agrees they'll be better for it," coach Andrew Webster says. "Defence is the big issue. We want to be one of the best defensive sides."
PLAYER TO WATCH: "Junior Paulo has a good engine, he's strong and he's intelligent for a front-rower (Forty20: I swear, where is the respect for the front rowers!!). He's got great skills, good hands and a great attitude."
Anyone able to advise how Tepia Morea (sic) went in the U20s trials; I've seen this bloke over the years in age football where he was a standout, now he is getting closer to open age footy, I'm wondering how he is going?
He went well V the Panthers. Played out wide an made good runs/meters.
Where are they playing him, centre or backrow - I know there is very little difference these days?
