Anyone have any info on the new hooker Carling?

From todays game. He puts his body in front well for a little fella. His timing is very good as he hits under the ball well. Tough bugger.
But honestly doesn't really offer much in attack. His service is ordinary & he doesn't pass from the ground much.
Its his last year playing 20s and cant see him progressing much further.
I think Vea is back from injury & will push for u20s hooking spot in coming weeks & Jayden Field is also returning from injury.

Great win today from the boys.
Haze Dunster was outstanding today. For mine one of the best on the field.
Stefano Utoikamanu performed very well.
Great to see Dressler back. I think he played 20-25min. He looked a little hesitant at times with a slight limp but i guess that's expected after being out for so long.

Also that our 2nd division competition is shit.... As soon as a player misses the top 30 after reaching 20+ years of age they are thrown out..
They aren't thrown out, but the majority aren't good enough for a full time contract right after graduating from NYC/Flegg. Because of that most of them quit after a couple of years playing for NSW/QLD Cup clubs. The rare merkin like Eisenhuth is very much the exception.

Given that players peak in their mid to late 20s, plenty might only be good enough for the NRL for a year or two around that age. But if they retire before they reach that age they will be lost to the game. Should clubs be handing out full time salaries to players who will only be playing part time footy in reserve grade? If not, players are going to have to juggle full time training with their day job. I guess not everyone is up to that level of sacrifice. I wouldn't be.

I wonder what the average pay for the NSW cup player is not on a full time contract..

Would be good to see the NRL have a cap and give them cash towards it. Might keep a few players interested.

Nathan Ross
Cody Walker (I think)
Rory O’brien
Clay Priest (I think)
Jamal Fogarty (I think)
Kenny Edwards
Matagi
Wicks
Manu

Are probably players that have played NRL recently and had a year or 2 without a contract with an NRL club

Here are team lists from the Harold Mathews and SG ball finals from the last 8 years or so:

https://nycdatabase.org/sg-ball-cup/

https://nycdatabase.org/harold-matthews-cup/

Interesting to see how, so few of the players actually go onto to be regular NRL players.

Sort of shows how hard junior recruitment is.

I am increasingly convinced that the NRL clubs should have nothing to do with rugby league players until they get to 18 or 19. The money clubs are spending on junior development should just be granted directly to the junior clubs.
