a question to the forum... why does it seem like Flegg is always waiting on SG ball players to be upgraded to get better? happened last year and it seems to be the case this year.

Most clubs would do this because Flegg is a nothing grade. If you’re any good and you’re too old for SG Ball you should be playing against grownups. That’s why they got rid of Presidents Cup back in the day. Under 21s is a pointless grade other than to give SG Ball kids something to do when their comp ends.

you also need some where for your senior fringe players to get a run each week,

problem is most teams have half a dozen or so fringe players and not 17 of them which is where the juniors come into Cup teams

Yeah if everyone is available then 13 of the top 30 (30 minus the 17 playing NRL that week) should be playing reserve grade. That leaves four spots in reserve grade for development/supplementary list players. Obviously injuries and suspensions open up extra spots. Pretty soon you’re calling on part timers from RM Cup or Flegg to fill in the reserve grade side.

Some clubs have put Sg Ball players into Flegg and missed the Sg Ball season. I know that's the case with Casey Mclean at Penrith. Unsure if they have done similar with others?
So perhaps they feel Sg ball is a wasted grade?

In our case last season we had plodders running around in flegg before the Ball kids came up.

This season those same ball kids jumped straight up into CUP. we wont have as many this year go from Ball to Flegg though as there are a few Flegg kids that are decent playing. They might start to filter though to CUP
