I think it at least adds credibility, but there’s plenty of examples of great coaches who couldn’t play. Mourinho, Belichick, Arthur’s, the list goes on.

The coach is the face of the club. He is the leader. He is the guy who needs to manage emotions and general moods and energy within the playing group
He is the one who needs to install belief into the team and turn them into better and more respectable humans. He needs to motivate them to want to give 100% and not to waste the opportunity they have been given as a professional athlete. He needs to gain the respect and trust of the players enough to come to him and talk about their issues and problems in both footy and life.
People who bag Bennet and say he is passed it should consider these things. I dont think its his tactics that make him great. Its his judge of character and the respect he has earned.

You’re the one who keeps saying nothing is his job.

The head coach is responsible for plenty of stuff. What he isn’t responsible for is recruitment/retention and pathways. Also cap management, negotiating TPAs for players, the reserve grade side, building/renting facilities, taking home games interstate or organising transport to games.

Let’s just say there’s plenty of stuff that’s not his job, but he stays busy enough coaching the NRL side. It’s literally a full time job, even with all the assistant coaches and other staff.

Ivan talked about embracing it and making the players understand that this is a special moment in their careers and some players may never get that chance again. So getting the players together and having a grandfinal Breakie/ lunch together just so it all sinks in and they can all bond and get rid of the nerves earlier in the day.
