Young Eels reel with talent

THE jury may still be out on the under-20 Toyota Cup national youth competition kicking off next year but the Parramatta Eels' squad is chock-full of outstanding talent.
With Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald heavily involved in the competition's inception, it comes as no surprise that the club is well advanced with its plans.
The Eels have selected 28 players from their Premier League, Jersey Flegg (under-20) and SG Ball (under-18) teams the latter of which won the premiership.
The Toyota Cup will replace Premier League as the curtain-raiser to NRL matches, with the same clubs meeting in both grades on game day every week.
The Eels' coach is Matt Cameron, who will also remain as one of Michael Hagan's two full-time NRL assistants with David Fairleigh.
Cameron coached the NSW under-19s this season and has another representative assignment next month when he takes the Junior Kangaroos on their tour of Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand.
With the Eels' Toyota Cup coaching structure mirroring that of the NRL squad, Cameron's assistants are Craig Culnane (now coaching Jersey Flegg after winning the Premier League title last season) and Joe Grima (a former lower-grade player and junior team coach with the club who is now Premier League assistant).
Craig Brennan, a teacher at Parramatta Marist High who has worked with recent Australian Schoolboys teams as well as Eels sides, is the strength and conditioning coach.
The club's development and community manager Andrew Hill becomes Toyota Cup manager.
Under the new comp's emphasis on welfare and study, players are required to be undertaking a traineeship or apprenticeship, TAFE or university study or some form of employment.
Hill outlined how that would work with the Eels' 20 players covered by the top tier of the Toyota Cup salary cap.
``At present six players will attend university undertaking a variety of degrees, with a further two players studying at private institutions in preparation for university entry at a later stage,'' Hill said.
``The club will also have 12 players undertaking an approved traineeship or apprenticeship.''
The squad is: Mitchell Allgood, Jason Baitieri, David Baumann, Nathan Campbell, Shaun Cox, Jay Hemming, Trent Hodkinson, Justin Hunt, Kris Keating, Taniela Lasalo, Joel Latham, Luke Latham, Mase Laulu Togagae, Owen Lauofo, Martin Lewis, Ben McLennan, John Mannah, Tim Mannah, Anthony Mitchell, Fareni Moefaauo, Daniel Mortimer, Luke Mottinelli, Dom Nasso, Tim Robinson, Sonny Taputoa Rea, Taulima Tautai, Ken TeWhata, Tony Williams
