Agreed. From highlights I've seen short kicking game looked a lot better. But neither of our halves have strong long kicking games and that's where most kicks come from. So if the defence contains our forwards which will happen most sets then you need to put a decent long kick on the end of it otherwise you're giving away too much field position.
I gather Joey is still no longer part of our coaching squad, evidence seems to point that he contributed nothing useful to our coaching.

From what I have heard from people who were at the game, the long kicking game from Mortimer and Robson was much improved too.
Both apparently kicked long and to the corners and Mortimer even got us a line drop-out from a long kick.

Just goes to show what a change in the coaching can do for some players.

You know he was sacked after the Tahu saga, or are you trying to be sarcastic if so I don't get your point.

mainly in the first quarter when we were dominating possession a few little errors crept in during the 2nd half one ball went dead another down the fullbacks throat but it was certainly an improvement on their 2010 effort

Hope you`re right, Boxhead. I understand that last week Mortimer kicked one out on the full, and one over the dead-ball line on the full. So this week is an improvement.

im not sure if it was mortimer or robson who kicked it but in the 1st half there was a beautiful kick for the corner from about 40m out it found touch roughly 4-5m from the goal line carney or locker couldnt have done it any better

he was also stood down from channel 9 but they had no problems with him commentating on the all stars match, I wasn't sure if he had slipped back in quietly.
My point was, if as you have said the kicking game of the halves have improved that much over the off season with new coaching, why couldn't this have been achieved with the specialist coaching they were receiving.

Mortimer couldn't kick the footy 30m with a gale behind him last year.
I can't see how he can suddenly learn how to kick?

My old man was at the game and he said Mortimer played like he was under a lot less pressure.

If you've ever kicked a football you'll know it's easy to get it wrong if you're trying too hard.

I don't think a 'natural' is the right person to be coaching anything.

He was never stood down by Channel 9. He stood himself for a month or so intil the drama blew over, but went onto fulfill his role with the Nine Network last season as on occasional guest on their shows and sideline commentator. Different story to being sacked by the Eels.

And I never said the latter at all. All I said was the short kicking seemed good in last nights game. Which is better than nothing, but I certainly don't think it's improved in the off season, I'll wait till a regular season match to determine that, and not just one but see it on a regular basis.

In 2009 i remember Mortimer doing that too, it about consistancy. I am happy that they kick well, that is very pleasing because if they do that the attacking flare can come from Hayne on the edges and MaGuire through the middle.

The question has to be asked how much pressure was on Mortz, last year when any sort of pressure was placed on the halves they struggled. If they have worked out way in the structure to give the halves more time to kick then that is good coaching but defences will smarten up as they did in 2010 and how the halves react and deal with different game plans determines if they are true title contenders or not.

I am pleased but not going to get excited to early, there is definatly still question marks over Robson and Mortz but at the moment Murray or Humble don't seam to be mounting much pressure and so they are the only options.

Good to read these articles, and thanks for the reports from those people who were there.

The result/score isn't a big deal, but it will be great for the squad's confidence to have put some combinations together in attack to score some points, and hold up alright in defence as well. No injuries, and there's the tiral trifecta.

Glad to read people thinking Casey Maguire is adding value, and that he had stints at dummy half and in the halfs. Along with Robson and Morts mentions in the papers, it will be interesting to see who gets SK's nod as 6,7,9,14 for Round 1.

Pretty much my thoughts as well.

I must add though, that I'm certainly not too excited about anything Mortimer does at this stage of the season. He has a hell of a lot to prove this year to justify his hype and his managers push for much higher wages at his last re-signing.

I do however like the fact that we beat a pretty strong Tigers outfit quite comfortably.
I'm a firm believer of the Stagger Eel theory - trials are not to be taken seriously. But, if it comes to the crunch, I'd rather be going into an NRL season with a win or two under my belt as oppossed to three losses.
I also believe that this opinion is particularly more pertinent this year under a new coach.

I agree with Suity.

All I'm expecting this year is improvement in some key areas, halves and hooker.
If that happens we should give the comp a bit of a shake and with some luck, who knows?

I just want us to blood some good young players, surprise a few teams and just come away from each game proud that our team gave it their best each week
