This will be an amazing tourist destination for Sydney. For locals and travelers alike.
Not just for the seafood, but as a foody destination with all the restaurant options, and also the building's unique architecture.
6 million people estimated to visit every year.

Four hundred roof ‘scales’: A glimpse at the new $836m Sydney Fish Market

The completion of the gleaming white roof resembling fish scales has brought the sprawling $836 million Sydney Fish Market building one step closer to opening, despite the waterfront project being snagged by construction delays, cost blowouts and financial uncertainty.

Five years after construction began, the final panel on the 200-metre-long roof canopy has been installed on the taxpayer-funded building at the head of Blackwattle Bay.

The government touted it as a significant milestone, saying Sydney’s skyline was “set to change forever with this new architectural marvel, just as the Opera House did when it was built in 1973”.

Premier Chris Minns said: “The revamped market will be truly spectacular, offering world-class, authentic seafood for an expected 6 million annual local and international visitors, ensuring it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations on offer in our harbour city.”

The beleaguered project was due to open next to the existing fish market at Pyrmont last year, but is now forecast to open in November – weeks before the Christmas seafood rush that draws thousands.

The 2500-tonne roof canopy features 400 panels made from glued laminated timber, or “glulam”, and roof cassettes. Its supporting structure comprises 594 timber roof beams stretching to 32 metres in length.

Once completed, the market building will house about 40 tenants and feature the wholesale fish market, a seafood school, shops and eateries. The wholesale floor will include the market’s Dutch clock auction, a live mud crab room, and three large crustacean tanks for lobsters.

The building was designed by Danish architects 3XN/GXN, with Sydney firms BVN and Aspect Studios. The project is being delivered by Infrastructure NSW and developer Multiplex.

Lands and Property Minister Steve Kamper described the “magnificent wave-like form” of the 20,000-square-metre roof as a testament to world-class engineering and design.

6 million per year is over 16,000 visitors per day.

I don't buy the maths - personally I think it'll be an overestimate.

Lol at taking any notice of the comments in the SMH and using them as evidence that the new Fish Market will be a dud. The SMH is as big of a rag as the Telegraph these days.
Not a surprising comment from someone who mourned the demise of City Extra in Church St Parra.

I don't get why anyone would be against new facilities like this. If you don't want to go then you don't need to but having the option is fantastic.

The food at City extra was average at best. Glad its gone.

The Telegraph actually supports infrastructure like this and writes positive articles about it. They actually encourage it..
The SMH is just a misery guts newspaper these days, and generally only prints comments that oppose everything.
It is the newspaper for f**king NIMBY's.

The average and overpriced food at City Extra was exactly why it failed and that dump refused to change.
Parramatta is full of an amazing array muti-cultural options these days that offer far better food at cheaper prices.

I really want it to succeed. It's another piece of the puzzle that is Sydney. I'll catch the metro from Rouse Hill, get off at Barangaroo and walk it as part of my day. Catch the Light Rail back to Central, change back to the Metro and I'm gone. I will judge the seafood options after I have visited.

The fact that it's over budget and over time is typical of today's infrastructure environment. That's the disappointing part of all of this, and nobody is ever held accountable.

You don't have to worry. It will be enormously successful. Just you wait and see.

And I will do the same and so will so many other locals.
It will become one of Sydney's top tourist attractions.

That's if the train strikes aren't on
