Rubbish.

I agree fully with the NRL's decision, including the inability of the Storm to accrue points this season.

But this guy is missing the point. The Storm didn't recruit a winning team. They signed young, unproven players with potential and made champions out of them. Success depends sooo much on coaching and team culture.

What Gould and just about everyone involved in the game (players and coaches) want is an ability for teams to RETAIN players that they made. It's not good in any way that players are made to leave a close-knit team and culture that has grown up together, because teams are not allowed to reward their players' success.

A league official, during the 15 man executive link up regarding the unanimous support for galloping gall, was heard to comment in the background that the salary cap promotoes mediocrity in the game.

The whole point of the salary cap is to keep poor clubs, and lazy clubs in the competition at the expense of the other more successful clubs who do it right.

Really, in this day and age, those who put the effort in and learn, should be well regarded.

When is NSW going to understand, the game has gone outside their state, exactly what they wanted, yet, they hamper so many clubs who have shown they know how to do it right.

If the poorer clubs can't survive without poaching talent from other clubs, identifying quality young players and development, they should not be in the competition. It promotes cheating of another form. Stay lazy, buy other players other clubs have invested ALL their resources in. Good System. NOT.

Give me a break. Elite athletes are no different to anyone else. To tell them they cannot get a pay rise year after year, is bordering on moronic.

Get it together NSW, improve your clubs, and stop bleating about the superiority of Melbourne Storm. Put simply, they are the best. Have been shown to be the best, and you can't beat them, purely because you guys are lazy.

GUS HAS GOT IT RIGHT. You stick to this archaic system, and we will lose our quality rugby players, and the game will be fit for no one to watch.

Get with the programme guys.
I am not a Storm supporter, far from it, but I know the best when I see it. I want my team to aspire to the same.

So Patrick Smith has got it right hey? He, like many on this forum, are dwelling on the bleeding obvious. Melbourne did the wrong thing, they didn't play by the rules and have been penalised. There's some debate about the harshness of the penalty, but generally everyone agrees - THEY BROKE THE RULES, THEY'LL PAY THE PRICE.

Now moving on...

Gus and other like minded individuals have moved the debate on. This Salary Cap needs major overhauling in at least two areas:
  • Clubs that invest massive amounts of money developing juniors into superstars should be allowed to protect those investments rather than cut them loose simply because they've become too successful.
  • The talent drain into other codes & countries that is drastically thinning out the quality of this competition.

The NRL need pull their head out of their ass, immediately start to address the above two issues, stop striving for mediocrity and pandering to the lowest common denominator.

happy with salary cap upheavel, the current system has cost my side plenty of talent.

i'd argue more than most clubs.

it's still not a valid excuse for the storm's actions

They don't cut them lose, they offer them a contract. If the players doesn't want to sign it they move on.

The NRL erred in 2002 when it allowed the Bulldogs, big-time salary cap rorters, to remain together by taking pay cuts.
A team that was marshalled outside game's rules proceeded to just miss the grand final in 2003 and won the premiership in 2004. Rorting the cap was rewarded. The NRL has learnt from such a lenient approach.

This is the single biggest contradiction Gallop has made. One one hand, he told the Storm to play for pride, and look to the Bulldogs as an example that all is not lost and quote unquote 'they won a premiership two years later'.

Now, he turns around 4 days later and says we shouldn't do what he bulldogs did (and were allowed to do).

This is ridiculous double standard from someone so hell-bent on maintaining consistency and fairness. Try telling Bulldogs supporters that in 2002 that they were rewarded from rorting the cap!

As for the so-called author of this article - please. His bosses are News Limited. Its pretty clear this is turning into a News Limited v Fairfax war all over again - and you guys are picking sides all over again, with an inability to think for yourselves. Have we learnt nothing?

A surprisingly great and clear thinking article on this issue, from an AFL writer deep in the heart of Cam Smith's victim mentality town. When will Gould (and those refusing to see this for what it is) wake up?

Gallop said from day one that the storm would need to cut players

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...-for-gallop-20100423-thhv.html?skin=text-only

"They are playing for personal pride in their performance, they are playing to restore faith in the fans who will stick with them in 2010. I'm sure many will, I'm sure some won't," he said at a press conference in Sydney this morning.

Gallop said that he believed News Ltd was sticking by the beleaguered club, stripped of two premierships and all 2010 points yesterday after a salary cap scandal was exposed.

"Their owners are committed to them. We certainly believe in having a team in Melbourne and we will do what we can to help them get back on track. They only need to look at the Bulldogs to see that is possible."

After detecting $1 million in salary cap breaches, the NRL disqualified the Bulldogs from the 2002 finals series, imposed a $500,000 fine and a 37-premiership point penalty.

Gallop made no apology for his competition's hard-line stance with Melbourne.

"Everyone knew the rules; the line was put in the sand in 2002 with what happened with the Bulldogs.

"You're playing under our rules - if you break those rules you must have known after 2002 that the risks were going to be high of a high penalty."

And the Storm will have to get their books in order in a hurry. Gallop said that, in 2011, "they won't be participating while they're over the cap".

Gallop addressed the difficulties of player movements during the season, and why the NRL chose to strip Melbourne of any meaning for their games, with the club unable to accrue points this season.

I read it as he think all Victorians who follow rugby league and still support the Storm are simpletons.
Simostorm, Brutus, Storming Norman - he's got a point!

Doing it right? Sitting on your arse and getting Rupert to pump in $66 million????
Got a Leagues club yet?

Really, in this day and age, those who put the effort in and learn, should be well regarded.

Another irrational NSW hater. Yep - it's all NSW fault that Melbourne are cheaters and cannot win a game of tiddlywinks without throwing someone some dirty cash.

If the poorer clubs can't survive without poaching talent from other clubs, identifying quality young players and development, they should not be in the competition. It promotes cheating of another form. Stay lazy, buy other players other clubs have invested ALL their resources in. Good System. NOT.
You dead set brainless f*ckwit. What junior has Storm ever developed you tard? Most of the QLD players came through Brisbane Norths - which is not a suburb of Melboring.
And thanks for developing Croker, Turner, Finch, White, Quinn, Hoffman etc etc

Give me a break. Elite athletes are no different to anyone else. To tell them they cannot get a pay rise year after year, is bordering on moronic.
Pfft. Run that argument by old age pensioners. Youre precious 'elite' nancy boys would have every bedpan, walking frame and bowling ball from Coburg to Cooktown hurled at them!!!!!!!!!

Get it together NSW, improve your clubs, and stop bleating about the superiority of Melbourne Storm. Put simply, they are the best. Have been shown to be the best, and you can't beat them, purely because you guys are lazy.
Too lazy to write up 50 contracts for a squad of 25? Too lazy to dig a hole and bury them?

GUS HAS GOT IT RIGHT. You stick to this archaic system, and we will lose our quality rugby players, and the game will be fit for no one to watch.
There is no such thing as a quality Rugby player!!!!!! You are so friggin dense that you don't even know what sport Melboring $torm play ffs!!!!!!!!!!

Get with the programme guys.
I am not a Storm supporter, far from it, but I know the best when I see it. I want my team to aspire to the same.
You a Brumbies supporter?

Or you have links to colourful racing identities if you admire criminal activities that mask crap and stupid administration.

F*ck off criminal - work out what sport we are discussing before you even bother to log your brainless head in again!!!!

you can support the storm (and melbourne) all you like mate they will greatly need your support through this crisis but the narrow minded "this is the nrl's fault" attitude of some storm supporters is wearing very thin
