Pato lacked penetration against the Broncos, but he sure as hell wasn't on his own. None of our forwards penetrated their line - not Laffranchi, not Payten, not Gibbs, not Galea, NO ONE. Any yardage being made was one or two passes wide of the ruck. In defence Pato was solid (16 tackles, 1 missed). He didn't drop any passes. Basically no errors apart from 1 missed tackle.
In saying that, I agree that he was ineffective. The reason is that HE IS NOT A PROP. He should be played as a second rower only. Sheens played him as prop because he had NO other option. Skandalis is injured, Lima likewise. I hear people talking about Jamie Small. From what I've seen he is definitely willing but would really struggle with the speed of first grade football causing a major problem as a fatigued defender.
For me the bottom line is Patterson is a no frills second rower being asked to play as a prop out of necessity. He puts in but is not of first grade standard (as a prop). The problem is that without Skandalis & Lima he is currently the next best option.
PS. Gibbs needs more time, he will be good in a year or two.
