Paul Gallen as future coach?

Would Paul Gallen make a good future coach for the sharks?

The big fella isnt far from retirement so what does the future hold for him and particularly what is his future role with the sharks?

I could see him being a Meninga or Ewen Mckenzie type coach for the team with a great tactical assistant to help with game plans, attack & defense etc..

Gal is a no bullshit character with great pull and respect in the game, i think his transition into coaching may very well work if done the right way..

Thoughts?

youre probably right!

he practically pulls the strings now though so I cant see the difference

if he isnt future coach potential then what role does he play in the club moving forward

clubs like manly keep their best and respected involved, we need to start doing the same

he definitely we will be having a few bouts that is for sure but yes he is getting on so the boat has already sailed quite some way on his boxing career

let me clarify, im not talking about him coaching right away but at some point in the future would he be a candidate

i think shows all the right qualities to be a coach at some point

his influence over the team now is more than probably any other player has in the game maybe bar cameron smith

he controls the media for us, he is in the thick of our recruitment, and people follow his lead, he is the single biggest motivating influence for our side

OK Birdee - the question was about Gal being a future coach at the Sharks.

He wants to go into boxing, totally up to him - WHY ???, money ?, fame ?, a future ?
I suggest he may have a few fights and get out.

The last player to become a coach - quickly after retirement - was Nathan Brown at Saints - failed miserably.

So Gal coaching the Sharks NOW - ridiculous !!

Who cares what his INFLUENCE is, who cares if he controls the MEDIA, who cares if he has input to the RECRUITMENT, who cares if he MOTIVATES players.

Since Gal has been there we HAVEN'T LOOK LIKE WINNING A COMP.

So my opinion, for what its worth - - Gal is a great player - with TOO MUCH input.

I see what youre saying

I look at it the other way, without gal having that kind of input and passion, we would have folded

and we would be never a chance of winning a comp, EVER

The same could be said for a lot of shark players over the last 10 years.

Gall is probably the worst SOO captain in terms of series won/lost, do you think he should not have been picked this year?

He's gonna be in the media, and he'll soon start to feel, "flip getting good money to talk about football? I'll stick to this I think".

I remember G Tallis saying D Lockyer will be a future Broncos coach, as soon as 4 years after his retirement. Jonathan Davies once said he'll go into coaching, but stayed in the media. As Alan Hansen once said about being a pundit, "it's money for old rope".

And Peter Sterling - same same. . .

Brutally honesty here.
I LOVE the sharks.

We have had the best coaches ever, Beetson, Gibson etc - we have had some fantastic players as well
BUT NEVER WIN A COMP

Our supporters are still there doing the same stuff etc etc.

WE NEED TO STAND UP - like the Bulldogs fans, the Broncos fans, Manly fans - (sorry I said Manly - I hate Manly)
WE NEED TO DEMAND RESULTS - not soft c**ck excuses about players miss behaving - this is a holiday camp for players - absolute holiday

Seriously - what is it about Gal that would make anyone think he would make a good coach?

He runs hard?
He's the captain?
He hogs the ball?
He is hard to tackle?

Think of all the best coaches there have been in this game.

How many fit that criteria?

Are we just an outpost for anyone who wants a turn at carrying a clipboard.

Roper
Sticky
Flanno
Gal

f**k....what an assortment of strategic dynamite.

Cam Smith has said he doesn't want to coach after the end of his playing career due to the hours involved in analysing videos and preparing for game day.
Is Gal aware of what is involved aside from giving pep talks at half time?

thats the point

he doesnt need to be used as a conventional coach, he just needs to put some steel into the joint much like he has as a player

leave the tactical stuff to an astute assistant or assistants

So you want the brains of the outfit to be 2nd in charge?

To be over-ruled.

Fhark.... Sounds like our club.

not really, bit like how CEO delegates responsibility to the executive team

gal could add that hard edge our club needs, rid us of that soft underbelly

he has the runs on the board for implementing change, taking himself as the example, one of the most hated in the game a few years back to now one of the most respected

clubs like manly keep blokes like gal in the fold, in the thick of it

we could learn a lot from manly as a club dare I say it

Birdee - - Gal can't get our team to harden up NOW, as a player, captain, COACH (basically)SOO captain.

Get him an assistant - what like Sharpy. . . Gal executed Sharpy, as we know.

Bottom line

Gals a great player , a great leader - BUT HE IS ONLY WORRIED ABOUT HIMSELF, its quite obvious - if you think any more than that - you re dreaming . . .

Why do you think Pom stayed so long - Gal. Why did Noakes get his job back - Gal. Why did Flanno get an extension - Gal
Why did Flanno get his fine paid by the Sharks - Gal - oops sorry can't say that - Salary Cap ??

Parts of what you say might be true

However, after SOO, Gal was the one that took a stand for the team to move sharpie on. The whole coaching debacle was doomed from the get go, SHARP DID NOT WANT THE JOB!

Gal has put the pressure on through the media to make shit happen, to stop further rot and to stop the sharks from having their worst season ever

He has used his weight of influence for the better good of the whole club, that is a club man not a narcissist

funny how we have started winning games again after the fact
