Paul Gallen in awe of Cronulla Sharks recruit Todd Carney

PAUL Gallen has one of the biggest engines in rugby league - but even he is amazed at the fitness levels of Cronulla recruit Todd Carney.

Paul Gallen, who last year famously slugged it out for 80 minutes in the front row for NSW during Origin II, said Carney is easily leading the way in speed and endurance tests during the off-season.

And Carney's skills are such that his teammates are struggling to keep up.

The day before Gallen plays in Saturday's NRL All Stars match on the Gold Coast, Carney will get first crack at Cronulla's No.7 jumper in a trial against Manly

"He's unbelievably fit for a bloke who isn't that big, but he's very strong," Gallen said as he joined his fellow All Stars in camp in Coogee.

"He would be the fittest in our team and one of the fastest. We're struggling with his skill level because he's a bit up there on the rest of us.

"We're getting used to him slowly, and a couple of trials will be good for us."

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan has been pleasantly surprised by former bad boy Carney, who was thrown a lifeline by the club last year.

"His speed, endurance and general skill set has surprised a lot of us," Flanagan said.

"He'll start at No.7 for us next weekend, and Wade Graham will be at six. Wade is more of a running half and Todd is happy to play that role. He did that with Terry Campese in Canberra.

"If he plays with Chad Townsend or a Jeff Robson, he will need to change that role, but Wade will be there first-up."

Gallen is easing his way back after a hectic 2011 that ended with a Four Nations title. Meanwhile, Gallen's All Stars teammate Nathan Hindmarsh has slammed a report that said he will retire at the end of the season.

"I grew up in Robertson, not Bowral, so there's a mistake already," Hindmarsh said. It was an odd story. When I'm ready to go, I will let people know."

Good on him, hope to see him do well with you blokes. I hope he retires peacefully after a solid career at the sharks with no off field indiscretions.

Just shows how far behind in the skills department we were. Errors anyone?

I hope thats in the past now & Flanno is doing something about bringing everyones skills up to par.
I remember reading an article about Mitch Brown when he started with the Tigers, he commented that the skills coaching at the Tigers was far above those at the Sharks.

Fugg I hope we've improved. Fed up with watching those 1 hit up then drop the ball on the second tackle in in our own 20 games. It makes me shitty for days!!!!

I would have thought we bought Carney to among other things spark our back line and assist with the execution of our attack and give it the creativity it so badly needs.

If his role in the side is not that then I believe they (the coaching staff) have got it wrong in regards to the use of Todd.

Will be interesting to see what way they are going to use him in the side in the up coming trial.

I like Todd at 7, Graham is more a natural 5/8 imo in the same way anasta or bird is.

Wades only two positions imo are lock or 5/8, we have our lock so i think it's a good selection, Wade was one of our best last year.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a Wade/Todd halves pairing.

The only thing with this pairing that I'm worried about is the statement below.

"He'll start at No.7 for us next weekend, and Wade Graham will be at six. Wade is more of a running half and Todd is happy to play that role. He did that with Terry Campese in Canberra.

Wade Graham at this stage of his career is no Terry Campese.

I believe Todd's best position is 6.

This team badly needs Todd at 6.

Seems we are building a team around Wade Graham and not Todd Carney.

I personally think Flanno has it right. Graham is more of a 6 than a half. He's not an organiser or a creator or plays etc. He's more dangerous running at the line with ball in hand, than trying to create something.

Don't be surprised if Best and Pom are sent to reggies quickly. Slow moving backs will just isolate Carney. Todd will need fast alert backs.

I reckon you'll see Gardner look better than ever this year.

I am happy with Carney and Graham but I would prefer Townsend and Carney with Wade at lock.

Could be worse.... Could be Robson

Unfortunately you just summed up all our backs.
