I am am shocked.

I loved Hessie's work right from the latter Split Enz days. He added character to every band he was in while being a bloody good drummer.

Neil Finn and Nick Seymour have apparently expressed their condolences.

That's devastating news. He'd always been my favorite member of Crowded House, the one with the most outgoing personality.

First Michael Hutchence. Now poor Hessie.

Seems people will do anything to avoid being friends with Richard Wilkins.

Sad day for Australian music,

Good band Crowded House, probably one of the best Australian bands not to be successful world wide. (unless I'm wrong).

By looking at those clips, Dont Dream its Over, Mean to Me, Everything is good for you, Its only natural, Weather with you, and plenty more Paul seemed like a funny, happy character.

RIP Paul Hester.

Crowded House were quite succesful in the US and UK - had a few top 10s.

And is as much a New Zealand band as it is an Australian band.

I think they should put out a best of Crowded House/Split Enz/Finn Brothers which Hester did involved with and have funds go to either anti depression research or anti suicide education. I have their DVD which has 21 songs, and each of them are rippers, but its only Crowded House, Tim Finn had a couple of good songs (Persuasion and Fraction Too Much Friction spring to mind), Neil Finn had a couple of good songs on his own a couple of years (Always the Last to Know and one other I can't remember), and of course Split Enz, and while Hester was only on the tail end of that great Kiwi band there's no reason why they couldn't ransack the earlier parts of Split Enz without Hester whereby you could grab 10-15 good songs also.

Perhaps Neil could redo the Seven Worlds Collide idea where he had the likes of his son from Betchudupa and the legendary Eddie Vedder in Auckland for a series of concerts. Imagine the money they could raise for a worthy cause to try and prevent this sort of thing?

Suicide, particularly teenage suicide is phenomonally high in New Zealand in particular, I personally think it'd be fitting if they raised money for both NZ and Australia physchiatric health research because its not a nice situation for anyone to be in, and worse, for those they leave behind.

Sad news. :(

Did anyone happen to catch the show he did on the ABC TV that started after his time on the Martin- Molloy radio show a few years ago, called "Hessies Shed"?

One show from that series featuring Renee Geyer and the guitarist from Daddy Cool (I think) is something I'll never forget.

Someone should petition the ABC to re-run those shows.

Sad, but what if some young kid had seen him hanging dead in the park? Would have scarred the poor kid for life.
