Peachey comeback not all sweet
July 6, 2004

FORMER Cronulla captain and club favourite David Peachey will be playing for his future at the Sharks when he returns from injury this weekend.

Coach Stuart Raper tonight said he and chief executive Steve Rogers were yet to make a decision on whether to re-sign the former NSW Origin fullback for the 2005 season.

Peachey has been sidelined for the past four weeks with a quadriceps injury but was today named in the Sharks side to meet the New Zealand Warriors at Toyota Park on Saturday night.

"To be honest we just haven't made a decision on Peach," Raper said tonight.

"It's something I'll be discussing with Steve Rogers and we'll be watching him play as well.

"He's been out for four weeks. At the moment my priority is getting him back on the field and playing again and we'll deal with other issues as the season goes on."

It's a delicate situation for the Sharks, who are treading carefully in fear of a backlash from fans who are loathe to see Peachey, who's played 202 games for the club, driven from the Shire.

Winger David Simmons has been impressive wearing the No.1 jersey in the absence of Peachey and would be a handy replacement.

the fans will tear down the grandstands Mr Rogers. Remember that line. I hope he stays but i wont hold my breath. Simmons has been good, but he aint the peach. Everything must come to an end, it might be better to go out now, however i still think he has something to offer

Yeah, I read that earlier.

I think Peach might be copping a bit of the Deano treatment.

NOT HAPPY STUEY!

F**k off. Peachey goes 90% of supporters will be pissed, including me. His defence hasnt been the best recently but in attack, he is on fire.

I'm not saying that is what is happening to peach, im saying that's what happened to dean.

I dont think we should have dropped him either. Maybe a long stint in PL would have eventually sorted him out. Not that it matters, we hae progressed to bigger and better things without him.

He just needed time I think but did we give it. He was a good player who had his time. With this in mind, I think its better he's gone, as a result some younger talent has taken his place and is with us for 3 more years

Absolutely Millers and others. Deano was the Chairman's Player of the Match not 2 or 3 weeks before he was dumped.

All because he spoke HONESTLY when he was asked to share his thoughts with Anderson and the rest of the team in a post-match 'think-tank'.

Warren, how you can say 'play bad footy and get dropped' is beyond me mate!

I dunno about that, SATW...We have struggled to find a regular, reliable #9, our defence has often been soft in the middle of the ruck, and our kick-chase game has lacked mongrel. As a result we let in many soft tries, especially at the end of a half of footy.

Hardly bigger and better things, in my book!

from what i can remember, he was playing average for a few games but then really played well in the game already stated. it was the NEXT week that he was dropped

wrong decision. a year ago. let's move on!

Nuffs, this isn't about bringing Deano back...It's about making sure that another stalwart, Peach, doesn't cop the same treatment Deano did.

If they handle Peach as poorly as they handled Dean, then it will be clear that Sharks management have not learned a bloody thing. And we really will tear down the grandstands...

Maybe not , I think there is a bit of smoke and mirrors going on. I hope we keep him , I think he could become a very good player if he can get over himself a bit.
I thought the tackle at best deserved a penalty in todays rules .Twenty years ago Rex Mossop would of just carried on commentating without a second thought to it.

FROM FOX SPORTS
Cronulla five-eighth Greg Bird will miss three games after being hit with his second suspension of the season.

Bird, 20, entered an early guilty plea to the judiciary on a grade two dangerous throw charge from an incident in Sunday's match against Newcastle.

Bird, a junior Kangaroo, had played only two games since returning from a 10-match suspension for kneeing South Sydney's Shane Marteene in the head in round four.

Bird is coming off contract with the Sharks and club chief executive Steve Rogers admits the pivot's on-field ill-discipline could affect his chances of being retained.

"It is very disappointing that he's again sitting on the sidelines because he had been playing good football the past two weeks," Rogers said.

"Having looked at the video I believe there was no real intent in Greg's tackle. It was a good tackle that went wrong.

"The club believes that Greg remains a valuable asset, but for us to make a judgment on his playing future with Cronulla, he and the club need him out on the paddock."
