Souths issue Peachey lifeline

SOUTH Sydney is poised to throw sacked English Super League fullback and former NRL star David Peachey a career lifeline for the remainder of 2006.
Despite having turned 32 last January, Peachey will hold contract talks with Souths supremos today to finalise terms on joining the Rabbitohs.
The Saturday Daily Telegraph understands that Souths will offer Peachey match payments of $2000 for each NRL appearance.
The shock move from Souths completes a dramatic month for Peachey, who was dumped by Widnes a fortnight ago after returning to Australia to visit his terminally-ill father.
Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson refused to be drawn on the possible recruitment of Peachey last night, but the move is understood to be a formality.
Once Peachey signs, the former Sharks star will be eligible to play for the Rabbitohs after being registered with the NRL.
Souths meet Canberra next Saturday, with Peachey a possibility of wearing the famous red-and-green jersey in the national capital.
Retired Rabbitohs fullback Eric Simms last night endorsed the Peachey SOS as Souths continue to search for a watershed win in 2006.
"It would be a good move," Simms said.
"He's still got plenty of life left in him yet. "He'll be a handy acquisition until the end of the season.
"It might make Souths liven up a bit in the second round. They showed a bit of promise there the other day."
Souths legend John Sattler was another Rabbitohs great prepared to support the Peachey push, suggesting the veteran fullback was still capable of making a contribution in the NRL.
"He's always been a pretty good club man so I think he would be handy for Souths," Sattler said.
Souths are also poised to step up their 2007 recruitment drive, with New Zealand Test centre Nigel Vagana on top of the club's latest shopping list.
The Saturday Daily Telegraph understands the Rabbitohs are desperate to lure Roy Asotasi, Reni Maitua, Frank Pritchard and Greg Bird.
Peachey was sacked from his $200,000-a-season deal with division one English outfit Widnes in England after the Vikings appointed a new chairman.
The Saturday Daily Telegraph has learned that Peachey was sacked in part because he had made more than one mercy dash home to be at his sick father's bedside.
The Rabbitohs opportunity comes eight months after Peachey lashed out at the Sharks for refusing to offer him another season in the NRL, claiming the club was disloyal.
